Each background has unique dialogue choices, and also affects other parts of the early game in minor ways, including your weapon and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/e\/522356\">attribute points<\/a> (but no bearing on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/avowed-guides\/524636\/best-abilities-class-trees-skills\">class<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In this <em>Avowed <\/em>guide, we\u2019ll explain <strong>what background to pick<\/strong> and break down exactly what each background starts with.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"what-is-the-best-background-for-you-in-avowed\">What is the best background for you in Avowed?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/what-is-the-best-background-for-you-in-avowed.png\" alt=\"The main Avowed character talks to Garryck after picking a background\" title=\"The main Avowed character talks to Garryck after picking a background\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Obsidian Entertainment\/Xbox Game Studios via Polygon\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">When creating a character in <em>Avowed<\/em>, you choose from one of five backgrounds:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arcane Scholar<\/li>\n<li>Court Augur<\/li>\n<li>Noble Scion<\/li>\n<li>Vanguard Scout<\/li>\n<li>War Hero.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s presented as if you\u2019re selecting a class as you would in a typical RPG, but for the most part, what background you pick is mostly just a role-playing choice, affecting dialogue options on a superficial level. In other words, the <strong>best background for you is the one you identify with most on a role-playing level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Primarily, the background you choose determines some of your dialogue options, but in our testing, these dialogue options have no bearing on the game. You similarly won\u2019t be locked into committing to specific stats, abilities, or weapons depending on the background you pick. So, for instance, if you choose Arcane Scholar, you might get to fire off a quip when talking about magical stuff with an NPC \u2014 but you\u2019ll still be able to wield a broadsword and use traditionally \u201cthief\u201d-class abilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">One of the only things that <em>does<\/em> change with your background selection is the <strong>starting weapon you\u2019ll find in the tutorial<\/strong>. While all backgrounds can wield all weapons, it\u2019s the primary weapon you\u2019ll use for the first part of the game before soon getting access to the full kit. (Everyone gets a shield during the tutorial as well.) <em>Avowed<\/em> features two-handed melee weapons, but every melee weapon at the start is one-handed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Finally, your background allocates a baseline of <strong>ten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/e\/522356\">attribute points<\/a><\/strong> across six stats: Might, Constitution, Dexterity, Perception, Intellect, and Resolve. But the distributions per background are mere suggestions. You can reset and assign these attribute points as you see fit before starting the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">With all of this in mind, we\u2019d suggest <strong>choosing a background based on the weapon you want first<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"all-weapons-and-stats-per-background-in-avowed\">All weapons and stats per background in Avowed<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">As mentioned, each of the five backgrounds in <em>Avowed<\/em> come with their own starting weapon (which can\u2019t be changed) and starting attribute allocations (which <em>can<\/em> be changed).
