He roars in front of the White House.\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/movie-textures-have-gone-too-far.jpg\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">A lot of things about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/522443\/captain-america-brave-new-world-review-harrison-ford\"><em>Captain America: Brave New World<\/em><\/a> didn\u2019t work. But I can\u2019t stop thinking about one thing that worked <em>too<\/em> well: the movie\u2019s CG textures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Specifically, I\u2019m talking about the lovingly rendered detail on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/marvel\/524402\/why-is-hulk-red-captain-america-brave-new-world\">Red Hulk<\/a>, the alter ego of \u2014 spoiler warning for those who didn\u2019t see it in the trailer \u2014 Thaddeus \u201cThunderbolt\u201d Ross, as played by Harrison Ford. More specifically, I\u2019m talking about Red Hulk\u2019s <em>chest<\/em>.\u00a0 There\u2019s just\u2026 <em>so much<\/em> to it. Every wiry chest hair, every fold of his skin, every tiny goosefleshy bump on his round red nipples. I swear, I wasn\u2019t planning to gawk at his nipples, but all of <em>that<\/em> just jumped right out at me. Even though I\u2019m sure I was supposed to be paying attention to Red Hulk smashing his way through the White House Rose Garden, all I could think was <em>CHEST.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Red Hulk\u2019s intricately designed, visceral torso wasn\u2019t the only overly textured body part in the movie. I could trace each wriggle of Samuel Sterns\u2019 bulging, gamma-mutated externalized brain. (And I <em>really<\/em> wanted to clean out those wrinkles with a cotton swab.) But Red Hulk stands out to me the most, because we already had another Hulk touchpoint to compare this one to. I don\u2019t remember the intimate aspects of Bruce Banner\u2019s Hulkified chest in any previous Avengers movie being nearly this distracting. Yet with this movie, someone decided that it was necessary to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/2\/24\/21151297\/marvel-spider-man-ps4-insomniac-peter-parker-undies-suit-nipples-design-edward-norton-hulk\">render each fluttering chest hair, each detailed pockmark, and each bumpy nipple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Sometimes we <em>do<\/em> need to see intimate textures in film. I think a lot about the rotting, oceanic crew of The Flying Dutchman in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/8\/6\/21348342\/pirates-of-the-caribbean-2-3-dead-mans-chest-at-worlds-end-reviews-gore-verbinski\"><em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em><\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/8\/6\/21347265\/davy-jones-bill-nighy-crush-pirates-of-the-caribbean-dead-mans-chest\"> Davy Jones\u2019<\/a> squishy, rubbery face tentacles in particular. That\u2019s the kind of texture that really adds to the atmosphere and setting of a movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">However, I get the feeling that I am not supposed to be distracted by CG Harrison Ford\u2019s nipples when Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is trying to talk him down from Hulk status. Ross is supposed to be monstrous, yes, but we get that already from his screaming, flaming rampage. All the extra hairy detail is unnecessary, and pushing it to center stage (well, center screen) just undermines any of the sense of character reality that\u2019s supposed to give us emotional catharsis for this character (which there was already little enough of).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Sometimes, CG looks a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/7\/19\/20697002\/simba-nala-related-siblings-the-lion-king\">little <em>too<\/em> real<\/a>, to the point where it\u2019s distracting from the overall story. Though in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/marvel\/523800\/captain-america-brave-new-worlds-post-credits-scene\"><em>Captain America: Brave New World<\/em><\/a>, that would imply there was an actual cohesive story to distract from.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Captain America: Brave New World <em>is out in theaters now.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/524445\/captain-america-brave-new-world-red-hulk-nipples\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of things about Captain America: Brave New World didn\u2019t work.
