So the release of (or the trailers for) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/522443\/captain-america-brave-new-world-review-harrison-ford\"><em>Captain America: Brave New World<\/em><\/a> may have prompted an obvious question in your mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Why is Red Hulk\u2026 red? There was a time when that was a mystery even in Marvel Comics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">When writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness introduced Red Hulk in 2008\u2019s <em>Hulk<\/em> #1, the whole point of him was that nobody knew who he was or how he came to be. It wasn\u2019t until two years later, in <em>Hulk<\/em> #22, that he was revealed to be a hulked-out Thaddeus \u201cThunderbolt\u201d Ross, longtime enemy of the Hulk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The story here is long and complicated, and even involves faking a death with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Life_Model_Decoy\">Life Model Decoy<\/a>, so suffice to say: A cabal of supergenius supervillains (including the Leader) decided it would fit their interests to turn Ross into a Hulk and have him under their thumb at the same time. In exchange for his cooperation with their plans, they offered to resurrect his daughter, Betty Ross (who was, as you might have guessed, dead at the time).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The next time the Hulk went on an unstoppable rampage, those villains hijacked an orbital satellite and drained all the gamma out of him, so they could wombocombo it with some cosmic energy (that\u2019s, like, a specific kind of energy in Marvel Comics), slam it into Thaddeus Ross, and presto: Red Hulk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/why-is-the-red-hulk-red-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"The Hulk getting the gamma sucked outta him, seen in flashback in Hulk #23.\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">So Ross\u2019 hulked-out form apparently can be red because he got his Hulk powers in a different way than Bruce Banner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There are other differences between them, too. For example: Red Hulk isn\u2019t just red, he\u2019s red <em>hot<\/em>. He emits enough gamma radiation that it can be felt as heat. (How does this keep him from irradiating everyone around him? Eh, it\u2019s comics.) That\u2019s why you can see Ross\u2019 clothing and other things he touches charring to embers in <em>Captain America: Brave New World<\/em> \u2014 it\u2019s a reference to Red Hulk\u2019s fiery nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">You may be thinking: <em>That\u2019s it? He\u2019s just red because of a made-up science explanation?<\/em> I can understand that it\u2019s not very satisfying. But on the other hand, have you ever asked yourself why the Hulk is green in the first place? It\u2019s not a color we usually associate with anger. In fact, it\u2019s not even the color Stan Lee originally wanted him to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Famously, Lee told <em>Incredible Hulk<\/em> #1 colorist Stan Goldberg to make Hulk <em>grey<\/em>. And the Hulk would have stayed that way, if not for how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolanddga.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/06\/22\/20\/how-to-obtain-the-perfect-gray\">generally difficult it is for CMYK printing<\/a> to produce a grey color that actually looks grey, and looks like the <em>same<\/em> grey from page to page. It was an even harder job for Marvel\u2019s mid-century printing technology, putting ink down in visible dotted patterns on off-white newsprint. Lee saw the first issue, hated it, told Goldberg to just do it green next time, and the rest is history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">So why is the Red Hulk red?
