I\u2019ve always had a soft spot for the Breakout and Arkanoid games. Smashing bricks with a paddle-shaped spaceship is very satisfying, and watching decimating combos unfold with multiball attacks on said bricks can be invigorating. So Atari announcing \u2014 or rather re-announcing<\/em> \u2014 a new Breakout game that will let me take out my aggressions on various structures in an abstract space is something I could really use right now. <\/p>\n

Breakout Beyond<\/em>, Atari\u2019s latest revival of a classic gaming brand, is coming out this March. It will \u201cchallenge players not just to break every brick, but to creatively breach the wall with score-building combos,\u201d the publisher said in a news release. Beyond<\/em> will turn Breakout on its side with a new horizontal orientation, tasking arcade-action enthusiasts to smash through walls left to right. Atari promises 72 levels and two-player co-op. <\/p>\n

Developer Choice Provisions<\/a>, best known for its work on the Bit.Trip games<\/a>, is behind Breakout Beyond<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Breakout Beyond<\/em> was previously announced in 2020 for the Intellivision Amico<\/a>, the crowdfunded and indefinitely delayed console<\/a> meant to revive the Intellivision brand. Atari said in a news release that it agreed to acquire and complete development of the game. (Atari had previously acquired the Intellivision brand<\/a> from the team behind the Amico.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players,\u201d said Ethan Stearns, senior director of games publishing at Atari, in a statement. \u201cThe team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout<\/em>\u2019s gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond<\/em> is a worthy new entry into the Breakout <\/em>pantheon, and we can\u2019t wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breakout Beyond<\/em> is coming to the Atari VCS<\/a>, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n
