While AMD&#8217;s version of Frame Generation was a boon for those of us not on Nvidia GPUs, the supported games list was made up of, err, two entries. Hopefully that won&#8217;t be the case with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/amds-fsr-4-will-use-machine-learning-but-requires-an-rdna-4-gpu-promises-a-dramatic-improvement-in-terms-of-performance-and-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\">FSR 4<\/a>, however, as according to a reliable source of leaks, when it comes to backwards compatibility, &#8220;it should just work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Exactly how it &#8220;should just work&#8221; is currently unclear (via <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wccftech.com\/amd-fsr-4-support-to-feature-in-all-titles-compatible-with-fsr-3-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wccftech<\/a>). According to @Kepler_L2, one of the more reliable leakers of modern times, AMD&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Kepler_L2\/status\/1883078926098165765\" target=\"_blank\">RDNA 4 driver will simply replace the FSR 3.1 DLL with FSR 4.<\/a> Whether that&#8217;s applied by default on all FSR 3.1-supported games, or a manual, game-by-game process, is up for debate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yeah, it should just work\u2122\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cantworkitout\/status\/1883080913497854272\">January 25, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"see-more__filter\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>AMD hinted at this in its slide presentation for CES 2025, which announced both FSR 4 and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/amd-just-gave-us-our-first-look-at-the-radeon-rx-9070-xt-and-rx-9070-rdna-4-gpus-and-i-am-officially-whelmed\/\" target=\"_blank\">RX 9070-series GPUs<\/a> (even if AMD technically didn&#8217;t in the briefing that followed). The bottom of the FSR 4 slide says: &#8220;AMD FSR 4 upgrade feature only available on AMD Radeon RX 9070 series graphics for supported games with AMD FSR 3.1 already integrated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, an &#8220;upgrade feature.&#8221; That certainly sounds like some form of integrated backwards compatibility to me, although it&#8217;s possible you might have to go through your FSR 3.1 games in the driver itself and swish a slider, or something to that equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I hope this rumour proves to be true. My hardware overlord, Dave James, has been pretty impressed with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/ill-say-it-the-best-thing-i-saw-from-nvidia-at-ces-wasnt-its-sweet-new-gpus-but-some-tasty-ai-every-rtx-gamer-can-enjoy\/\" target=\"_blank\">what he&#8217;s seen of DLSS 4<\/a>, including in his testing of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-fe-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">RTX 5090<\/a>. You&#8217;ll need an RX 9070-series card to play with the new tech, at the very least.<\/p>\n<p>AMD will certainly be hoping that FSR 4 makes a difference, given the competitive price point that Nvidia has set the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070\/\" target=\"_blank\">RTX 5070<\/a> at. $549 for a card that promises &#8220;RTX 4090 level performance&#8221; thanks to DLSS 4?
