This game is unrelated to the Tales of Kenzera universe; it\u2019s a standalone horror game. Surgent Studios CEO and <em>House of Dragons<\/em> actor Abubakar Ssalim said it\u2019s still \u201cin earnest conversation about further projects set in the Tales of Kenzara universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cBoth Surgent and Pocketpair are well-versed in taking risks,\u201d Salim said. \u201cWe noticed a pattern in the entertainment industry, and Pocketpair has given us the opportunity to make a horror game about it. It will be short and weird, and we think players will be interested in what we have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The game, which is unnamed at this time, is expected out in 2025.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is the energy I want to see driving games in 2025\u2014developers lifting each other up, creating together, and pushing the industry forward.<\/p>\n<p>Massive love to the Pocketpair team! Alongside the announcement of the Pocketpair partnership, Salim noted that the pair up is what he\u2019d like to see in 2025: \u201cDevelopers lifting each other up, creating together, and pushing the industry forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Video games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/504702\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-development-costs-700-million\">cost more than ever to make<\/a> while funding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24058266\/video-game-industry-funding-gap\">has seemingly all but dried up<\/a>. Last year was particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/death-occurs-in-the-dark-indie-video-game-devs-are-struggling-to-stay-afloat\/\">hard for smaller studios to stay afloat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24177290\/video-game-industry-layoffs-studio-closures-record\">thousands of people across the industry were laid off<\/a>. Even critical success couldn\u2019t help studios; <em>Tales of Kenzara: Zau<\/em> was lauded for its take on Metroidvanias, led by an actor in a Game of Thrones television show, and still couldn\u2019t capitalize on that success \u2014 until another indie studio stepped up to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">With <em>Palworld<\/em>, a survival creature-catching game, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-14\/-palworld-creator-explains-secret-sauce-of-indie-game-sensation\">Pocketpair generated more profit that it could handle<\/a> at its size. In an interview with Bloomberg, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe said <em>Palworld<\/em> cost less than \u00a51 billion ($6.4 million) but brought in tens of billions in profit. Now, it\u2019s seemingly using that success to push other indies forward, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cAs the games industry continues to grow, more and more games find themselves struggling to get funded or greenlit,\u201d Pocketpair Publishing lead John Buckley said in a news release. \u201cWe think this is a real shame, because there are so many incredible creators and ideas out there that just need a little help to become incredible games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pocketpair.jp\/publishing\">On the Pocketpair Publishing website<\/a>, the company states that it doesn\u2019t want to take control from a developer, nor does it want to \u201cchange your dream or push you to make a certain type of game.\u201d It wants to give developers money to make their dream games. It\u2019s a message that sounds familiar; smash hit social deduction game <em>Among Us<\/em> developer Innersloth used its success to launch a similar initiative in 2024 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24174029\/among-us-innersloth-outersloth-funding-initiative\">Outersloth<\/a>. Like Pocketpair, InnerSloth\u2019s success was outsized to the studio\u2019s origins. <em>Among Us<\/em> blew up in 2020 and has continued to see success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cBeing indie devs ourselves, we knew one of the hardest things to get was straight up funding,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24198840\/inntersloth-among-us-funding-indie-games\">Innersloth communications director Victoria Tran told Polygon in 2024<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re very privileged to be in the position we\u2019re in and have the eyes on us, so we hoped we could create something that hopefully inspires others to pay it forward, wherever they can and whatever that means to them.
