Mob Entertainment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/816640114\/Poppy-Playtime-lawsuit-via-Polygon\">via a lawsuit filed Wednesday in California and reviewed by Polygon<\/a>, is asking the court to force Google to take down its game and for damages of at least $150,000 per infringing work. The lawsuit also targets the unnamed developer who created the fake <em>Poppy Playtime<\/em> games using the Daigo Game 2020 moniker. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Daigo Game 2020 is listed as publishing the two <em>Poppy Playtime<\/em> apps on Google Play, as well as games based off Skibidi Toilet and <em>Minecraft<\/em>. The <em>Minecraft <\/em>app, called <em>Minicraft 2020<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/appmagic.rocks\/publisher\/daigo-game-2020-lnc\/1_Daigo%20Game%202020%20lnc\">is listed on AppMagic<\/a> as having more than 50 million downloads. (<em>Minicraft 2020 <\/em>and the Skibidi Toilet games have been removed from the Google Play store.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Poppy Playtime<\/em> is a survival horror game that\u2019s published episodically, the first of which was published in 2021 by Mob Entertainment. It\u2019s playable on Windows PC, consoles, and mobile. So far, there are three chapters, with a fourth scheduled for release on Jan. 30. Basically, the premise is that you\u2019ve got to survive in a terrible toy factory with scary toys \u2014 the big one being Huggy Huggy, an awful blue monster with rows of shark-like, disgusting teeth. The video games themselves are quite popular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/mob-entertainment-angry-films-and-legendary-entertainment-lock-deal-to-bring-poppy-playtime-to-the-big-screen-302141513.html\">with more than 40 millions across platforms, according to the company<\/a>, but it\u2019s also wildly popular on YouTube, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L-5NTMuy0cU\">where Let\u2019s Play videos<\/a> and lore explainers rack up millions of views. Legendary Entertainment is making a movie based off the franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">All of this is to say that <em>Poppy Playtime <\/em>is a moneymaker. After its first two chapters were published, players were eagerly awaiting the third installment. At least one person looked to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the next chapter, Mob Entertainment said in its lawsuit, by publishing applications that directly use the <em>Poppy Playtime<\/em> name to lure in players. The unauthorized games are titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.PoPPyPlaytimeKing.BuggyChapterPlaytimeMOPckapter3\">Poppy Playtime Chapter 3<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.chapter4game.playtimechapterp25\">Poppy Playtime Chapter 4<\/a><\/em>, and they are currently available to install on the Google Play store. Not only do the they use the <em>Poppy Playtime<\/em> name, they also use screenshots from <em>Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2<\/em>, Mob Entertainment wrote. Per the Google Store, these purported scam games have been downloaded more than 1 million times. Both of these games are free to install, but then ask the player to download a mod to access the game \u2014 priced between $30 to $95 \u2014 according to the lawsuit. After paying for the game, \u201call [players] receive is a link to a dead webpage,\u201d the company wrote. The lawsuit claims these apps are being used to \u201ctrick consumers into spending $95 for a game prior to its release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There are other games, seemingly by other creators, on both Google Play and the iOS App Store that appear to be influenced by\u00a0<em>Poppy Playtime<\/em>, but which don&#8217;t appear to use the copyrighted <em>Poppy Playtime\u00a0<\/em>name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Google\u2019s role in this, Mob Entertainment wrote in the lawsuit, is due to its unwillingness to take down the scam games. Mob Entertainment said it issued DMCA takedowns on both infringing chapters <em>and<\/em> has otherwise contacted Google to inquire. In December, Google did remove the content. But days later, the content returned to the Google Play store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Mob Entertainment argued that the purported scam games have \u201ctarnished\u201d the company\u2019s reputation due to their bad quality \u2014 \u201cmany grammatical mistakes\u201d and \u201can ugly color scheme,\u201d per the lawsuit \u2014 of the \u201cbait-and-switch scam,\u201d plus the high price of it ($95 for almost nothing).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Mob Entertainment\u2019s fight against scam, slop ripoffs is, unfortunately, not unique. The conversation has centered recently around the Nintendo Switch eShop that, <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/nintendo-eshop-switch-slop-clones-unpacking-scam-ai-art-1851722248\">as Kotaku put it<\/a>, \u201cis filled with a lot of garbage that was likely made quickly and is only there to cash in on a trend or holiday.\u201d <em>Unpacking <\/em>developer Wren Brier posted about studio Witch Beam\u2019s struggle to get blatant, low-quality <em>Unpacking<\/em> clones off the eShop. \u201cIt&#8217;s been over two weeks and these are still on the eShop,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:en7lk6dayjekqei65vpfornn\/post\/3ldfndqrhzk2o\">Brier wrote on BlueSky<\/a>. \u201cNintendo hasn&#8217;t responded to any of our reports of these egregious scams which are using our trademarked game name and purposely tricking Nintendo customers into buying cheap fakes.\u201d The <em>Unpacking<\/em> clones have since been removed, but there\u2019s plenty more slop on the eShop with the same agenda \u2014 and, as indicated by Mob Entertainment\u2019s lawsuit, on the Google Play store, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Polygon has reached out to Mob Entertainment and Google.
