While movie musicals sometimes have one or two songs that stand out, like Rene\u00e9 Rapp\u2019s sultry cover of \u201cWorld Burn\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/24033633\/mean-girls-musical-movie-review-2024-tina-fey\"><em>Mean Girls<\/em><\/a> musical movie, they usually pale in comparison to the Broadway versions. Sometimes it\u2019s a case of the originals being so iconic in people\u2019s minds. Sometimes it\u2019s because musicals usually cast famous actors instead of good singers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But in 2024\u2019s <em>Wicked<\/em>, the majority of the songs, largely sung by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, are <em>just<\/em> as good as the original recordings featuring Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/opinion\/489419\/wicked-sentimental-man-jeff-goldblum\">Some of the movie tracks, dare I say, are even better than their stage equivalents<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I know, I know \u2014 it\u2019s musical theater blasphemy. But I have reasons!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Wicked<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wicked-Bonus-Jon-M-Chu\/dp\/B0DH16XN6S\">now available on VOD for home viewing<\/a>, so we have a good excuse to compare them all again. Here\u2019s a track-by-track comparison of all the songs in the movie and Broadway versions of <em>Wicked<\/em>, with my picks for (and defenses of) which ones should be more\u2026 popular.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">[<strong>Ed. note:<\/strong> General spoilers ahead for the plot of<em> Wicked<\/em>, as told through these songs.]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/wicked-song-showdown-which-version-is-better-the-movie-or-the-broadway-ost-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018No One Mourns the Wicked\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: movie version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"No One Mourns the Wicked\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/0br9vcQnqeqp9PKCGsrxAF?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">On the Broadway soundtrack, Glinda (Chenoweth) sounds like she\u2019s processing the news of Elphaba\u2019s death in real time and putting on a face as the PR branch of the Ozian government. But Ariana Grande sings it like she\u2019s mourning an event she already knows about. She brings a depth to this song that kicks me right in the gut. She sings it like she\u2019s grieving the loss of a great love. (And considering everything she\u2019s said about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/497481\/wicked-elphaba-glinda-queer-sapphic-fanfic-fan-art-gelphie\">Glinda and Elphaba\u2019s relationship<\/a>, I\u2019m inclined to believe that was deliberate!)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">A friend of mine pointed out one specific difference in line delivery that haunts me. It\u2019s toward the end, when Glinda starts to echo the ensemble. When the ensemble sings \u201cShe died alone!\u201d, Glinda repeats it. Chenoweth delivers the line with equal emphasis on each word, but Grande lingers on the \u201calone,\u201d drawing it out. It comes at roughly 6:34 on the Spotify track above. It\u2019s absolutely heartbreaking!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018Dear Old Shiz\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: Broadway OST version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dear Old Shiz - From &quot;Wicked&quot; Original Broadway Cast Recording\/2003\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/446KBz5OadTvBfXPd3L3gJ?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">At just over a minute long, this is one of the shorter, less fun, less meaningful songs. Both versions are solid, but there\u2019s a little more <em>oomph<\/em> to the harmonies in the original.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018The Wizard and I\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: Broadway OST version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Wizard And I - From &quot;Wicked&quot; Original Broadway Cast Recording\/2003\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/7279cZz7RhBAmRHAPraTeV?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I appreciate Cynthia Erivo\u2019s take on Elphaba, which is more reserved and shy than Idina Menzel\u2019s approach. It\u2019s a great take on the character! As such, her version of \u201cThe Wizard and I\u201d is more subdued. It\u2019s a fitting choice for this version of the character. But Menzel\u2019s triumphant take on the song is so foundational! It soars! It\u2019s an \u201cI Want\u201d song, but with an added layer of dramatic irony, because we know how this story ends for Elphaba.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018What Is This Feeling?\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: Broadway OST version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Is This Feeling? - From &quot;Wicked&quot; Original Broadway Cast Recording\/2003\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2lNRPajwEfma5EEmsgAe1w?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The movie version is really damn good \u2014 I love the initial back-and-forth banter in this one so much, especially with the extra emphasis on certain line deliveries to fit the specific situation of the two girls trying and failing to fall asleep in the same room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But the original has an almost tactile viciousness, especially toward the end, when Elphaba and Glinda are singing along together. Erivo\u2019s and Grande\u2019s voices work a little <em>too<\/em> well here, blending together seamlessly, whereas Chenoweth\u2019s and Menzel\u2019s vocals clash in a way that gives the song a delicious layered texture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018Something Bad\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: Broadway OST version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Something Bad - From &quot;Wicked&quot; Original Broadway Cast Recording\/2003\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/1H2ZgFkgOHssJE8y24r5V2?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It comes down to the delivery of \u201c<em>Baaaaaaaaaad<\/em>,\u201d and the original just does it better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018Dancing Through Life\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: movie version \u2014 but just barely<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dancing Through Life\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/6qo8v2y2MHUSPLs7VBc6cG?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">More than any other song in this competition, this was a <em>really<\/em> damn close call. The original is full of fun, snappy moments between characters, and Norbert Leo Butz (the original Fiyero) has a gorgeously rich quality to his voice. But man, Jonathan Bailey in the movie cranks up Fiyero\u2019s sensuality, putting a fun, jazzy spin on the song. The synths in the background also add a wonderfully bubbly quality that really sells the whole \u201cbrainless, painless\u201d energy. It feels more like a party song!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cDancing Through Life\u201d is also heavy on the dialogue exchange, with Boq asking Glinda on a date, and Nessarose telling Elphaba about her exciting plans for the future. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/495039\/wicked-adaptation-ozdust-duet-movie\">movie enables those interactions to come through more<\/a>, with heightened focus on how the characters deliver the lines. It works in a subtler way than Broadway theater, where the cast has to project to hit all those balcony seats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018Popular\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: Broadway OST version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Popular - From &quot;Wicked&quot; Original Broadway Cast Recording\/2003\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/57Pk2GU0ABFYBbbcgYxqki?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Listen, Ari came through! It\u2019s a fantastic cover! But while her version is fluffy and sweet like cotton candy, Chenoweth\u2019s is the excited sugar rush of a can of Red Bull at 3 a.m. \u2014 which is exactly what Glinda is experiencing in that scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018I\u2019m Not That Girl\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: movie version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I\u2019m Not That Girl\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2tWioTW2rs0CXf1dTXlRrX?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Now with <em>this<\/em> Elphaba song, Erivo\u2019s version shines over Menzel\u2019s. In a movie, the song can be softer and more intimate, and therefore more heartbreaking as Elphaba looks on at Fiyero and Glinda, crooning about the ache she feels, knowing she isn\u2019t ever going to be what she thinks he\u2019s looking for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018One Short Day\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: movie version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"One Short Day\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/4jNerIJa2IOeL5gVDvMNLW?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The OST version always fell in the middle of the road for me. The movie version, however, soars near the top of my list. It has a fantastic buildup that really feels like we\u2019re seeing the glorious Emerald City unfold in real time. Also! The percussion is just so damn catchy. I can\u2019t listen to this one without nodding along to the drums and cymbals. The movie version <em>also <\/em>includes Menzel and Chenoweth\u2019s cameo on the expanded Wizomania section, which adds even more fun.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018A Sentimental Man\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: movie version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Sentimental Man\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2Nox49biysRuKoIaDWMemm?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s very hard to make this song interesting, but at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/opinion\/489419\/wicked-sentimental-man-jeff-goldblum\">Jeff Goldblum\u2019s version<\/a> didn\u2019t put me to sleep!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">\u2018Defying Gravity\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Winner: Broadway OST version<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Defying Gravity - From &quot;Wicked&quot; Original Broadway Cast Recording\/2003\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/184HGdGIscUiPbDuqbvHuN?utm_source=oembed\" width=\"720\" height=\"152\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s not that the movie version is bad. Far from it, actually! Even with the choppy breaks and the extra fluff (which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/508496\/wicked-sing-along-theater-experience-karaoke\">gives inexperienced singers<\/a> some time to catch their breath during sing-alongs, but really cramps the pacing), it\u2019s still fantastic. I love Erivo\u2019s take on the end riff, and how desperate Grande sounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But the original is just pure magic. The back-and-forth between Glinda and Elphaba is tight and tense, and it all escalates with perfect timing, building more and more until that final big note. It\u2019s iconic for a reason, and there\u2019s probably no chance of any cover ever bringing the original down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">We won\u2019t get a chance to evaluate the musical\u2019s second act until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/explained\/483419\/what-to-know-before-wicked-the-movie-part-i\"><em>Wicked: For Good<\/em> hits theaters this November<\/a>, but if<em> <\/em>part one of the movie is any indication, I just might be swapping out some of the OST versions in my listen-through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/rankings\/509631\/wicked-movie-musical-songs-idina-menzel-cynthia-erivo\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Wicked movie compelled me to do something I never thought I would do: actively choose to listen to the movie-musical versions of certain songs over the original Broadway cast recording.
