Sony seems determined to turn every PlayStation game in its library into a movie or TV show \u2014 and it has continued that push by announcing that it\u2019s developing live-action movies based on Horizon Zero Dawn<\/a><\/em> and Helldivers 2<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The news was shared by PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash during Sony\u2019s press conference at CES<\/a> in Las Vegas late Monday. Both films are early in development and have no talent attached yet \u2014 at least not that Sony was willing to divulge.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s surprise smash hit Helldivers 2<\/em> is an online co-op shooter in which players assume the role of armored space commandos fighting hordes of bugs and robots. Any movie adaptation will have to contend with the huge and obvious debt<\/a> its setting owes to Paul Verhoeven\u2019s satirical action masterpiece from 1997, Starship Troopers<\/em>. Qizilbash said that PlayStation Productions was working with Sony Pictures on the adaptation.<\/p>\n

Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>, the open-world adventure game in which post-apocalyptic tribal hunter Aloy fights giant robot animals, sounds like it\u2019s intended to be a major movie project. Qizilbash said PlayStation Productions was developing the film with Columbia Pictures \u2014 Sony Pictures\u2019 flagship movie brand, which has already released movies based on Gran Turismo<\/a><\/em> and Uncharted<\/a><\/em>. \u201cJust imagine Aloy\u2019s beloved origin story, set in a vibrant far-future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen,\u201d Qizilbash teased.<\/p>\n

PlayStation Productions was formed in 2019 with the intention of turning Sony\u2019s game franchises into movies and TV shows, and it\u2019s been pretty busy. As well as Gran Turismo<\/em> and Uncharted<\/em>, it has produced TV shows based on Twisted Metal<\/a> <\/em>and The Last of Us<\/a><\/em>; the second season of the latter will premiere on HBO in April. A God of War<\/em> show is being developed for Amazon Prime Video by Ronald D. Moore<\/a>, Ghost of Tsushima <\/em>has both a live-action movie<\/a> and an anime spinoff<\/a> in the works, there are reportedly Gravity Rush<\/a><\/em> and Days Gone<\/a><\/em> movies in development, and an Until Dawn<\/em> movie will hit theaters in April.<\/p>\n
