{"id":1083786,"date":"2026-01-23T18:09:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T18:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/?p=503322"},"modified":"2026-01-23T18:09:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T18:09:09","slug":"the-23-games-i-played-with-my-kids-last-year-and-the-87-i-played-without-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/the-23-games-i-played-with-my-kids-last-year-and-the-87-i-played-without-them\/","title":{"rendered":"The 23 games I played with my kids last year (and the 87 I played without them)"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-23-games-i-played-with-my-kids-last-year-and-the-87-i-played-without-them.jpg\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In 2007, I started marking the end of the prior year by publishing a list of all the video games I played in the preceding 12 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I\u2019ve changed my approach since then, especially this time, as I look back at the 110 (or so) video games I played in 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-vox-media-highlight vox-media-highlight\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-23-games-i-played-with-my-kids-last-year-and-the-87-i-played-without-them.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Game File is a thrice-weekly newsletter about the culture and business of video games, written by longtime gaming reporter Stephen Totilo (Kotaku, Axios, MTV News, The New York Times). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/subscribe\">Subscribe here<\/a> for scoops, interviews and regular updates about gaming with the author&#8217;s nearly 8-year-old twins.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Today\u2019s list is divided into shorter lists. First, there are the 2024 games\u2013and some older games\u2013that I played with my son and daughter in the past year. The twins both just turned eight and have been gaming with me since 5 \u00bd, though only on Switch until we added a second platform this year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/astro-bot-kids-impressions-ps5?utm_source=publication-search\">guess why!<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">After the list of games I played with my kids is the rundown of games I played alone. I\u2019m excluding any that aren\u2019t out yet and that I only played for work. I may have forgotten a game or two as well. That tends to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">When I started making these lists, as a young reporter for MTV News, I was trying to make a case for finishing games. I was distressed that the finales of too many games went unseen. I would do my part to normalize the act of&nbsp; getting to the end of what we\u2019re playing. That first list, published in early 2007, was <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20071215101201\/http:\/\/stephentotilo.com\/2006\/12\/08\/mtv-multiplayer-how-many-games-did-i-finish-in-2006-gaming-on-the-subway-and-finding-big-poppa.aspx\">102 games long<\/a>, and I marked off the 21 games I had \u201cfinished.\u201d <em>Half Life 2: Episode 1<\/em>! <em>Chibi Robo<\/em>! <em>Suikoden V<\/em>! And so on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">By 2017 (<a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/i-started-these-269-video-games-in-2016-and-liked-a-who-1791917044\">269 games played in 2016<\/a>; a second straight year of not getting to <em>Bloodborne<\/em>) I dropped the bit about completing games. I switched to recommending my favorites. That seemed more useful for readers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">After writing my <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/the-87-games-i-played-last-year-and-the-ones-i-recommen-1840979502\">2019 run-through<\/a>, I took a break from these lists. But I have brought it back now, thanks to the urging of Polygon editor-in-chief Chris Plante. (He said he liked them! I think he wasn\u2019t joking?)<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I hope you\u2019ll find some interesting games below. I think I found some hidden gems. Please also let me know what I\u2019m missing, what the kids might like, which games I should give more time to and so on. And, yes, it\u2019s silly that I played 70 hours of a game I didn\u2019t love when there was so much else to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>A caveat: <\/em>Via my work, I got access to most of these games via free review copies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>And if you are in a rush: <\/em>Scroll to the bottom for my nine favorite games of 2024!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New 2024 games I played with my kids<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Another Code: Recollection<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 Our biggest surprise of the year\u2026the first half of this \u201crecollection\u201d is a beautiful 3D remake of a 2D mystery game released on the DS in 2005. I was a little worried this game was too grown-up for my kids. Teenage protagonist Ashley Robbins explores an old mansion, trying to track down her missing dad while solving puzzles and tracing a family tree that had several branches clipped by early deaths. The interactivity of the mystery hooked them, there was only one gunshot and my daughter later told me that she learned from the game that daughters eventually become disappointed with their dads. Uh.. educational! We wound up loving the game even before we got to the collection\u2019s latter half, a remaster of the second, longer but inferior Another Code that was first released on the Wii in 2009.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Astro Bot<\/em><\/strong> (PS5) \u2014 The kids\u2019 first PlayStation game and one of their favorites of the year.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Botany Manor<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(Switch) \u2014 a plant mystery game that I dug more than the kids did.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Cat Quest III<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 One of our favorite co-op games.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Just Dance 2025<\/em><\/strong> (Switch)&nbsp; \u2014 Responsible for getting Blackpink\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gQlMMD8auMs\">Pink Venom<\/a>\u201d forever stuck in my head.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 Better than decent, but less than what we\u2019ve come to expect in our three years of playing Zelda games together. It\u2019s our least favorite, ranking below <em>Tears of the Kingdom <\/em>(my son\u2019s favorite), <em>Link\u2019s Awakening<\/em> remake (my daughter\u2019s top pick),<em> Breath of the Wild<\/em> and<em> Skyward Sword HD<\/em>. In this game, Zelda copies \u201cechoes\u201d of objects and enemies, then deploys them to solve puzzles and defeat foes. It\u2019s a great concept we would have enjoyed more, if selecting and using echoes wasn\u2019t cumbersome and if we were impressed with more than one of the game\u2019s dungeons (just the one on the mountain).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Lego Horizon Adventures<\/em><\/strong> (PS5) \u2014 We\u2019ve had an okay time playing co-op.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Little Kitty Big City<\/em><\/strong> (Switch)&nbsp; \u2014 The kids love being a cat that can knock people\u2019s cell phones from their hands.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>A Little to the Left: Seeing Stars<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(Switch) \u2014 An expansion to one of my daughter\u2019s favorite games.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Mario vs Donkey Kong <\/em><\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 An early 2024 fixation that long since faded.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Mika and the Witch\u2019s Mountain<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 We liked this adventure about delivering packages via flying broomstick, but dropped it and need to return.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 This speedrun compilation is probably the only way the kids can stomach the NES <em>Zelda<\/em> or <em>Metroid<\/em>. And it\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve re-expierienced <em>Zelda II <\/em>since the 1980s.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Princess Peach Showtime<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 The kids\u2019 favorite playable Peach transformation in this game: pastry chef. Please give us a full-scale cake-decorating game, Nintendo.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Stitch<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 Fun puzzle game.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Sticky Business<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(Switch) \u2014 A sticker-making simulator that didn\u2019t really click with them.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Super Mario Party Jamboree<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 The board game part stokes too many bad feelings, but the mini-games are mostly a joy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Older games I introduced to them<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Katamari Damacy Reroll <\/em><\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 I first tried this all-time great with them when they were six, but the dual-analog controls were too confusing. At age seven, they got into it and loved rolling everything up. They loved it so much that we went on to play\u2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie <\/em><\/strong>(PS5) \u2014 Soooo good, and eventually enough Katamari for them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Games from previous years that we kept playing in 2024<br \/><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 Almost exclusively played this year for catching horses, visiting stables to swap new horses for old, and, most recently, for upgrading horses (Update: While I was writing this, we also revived our first dead horse.)<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 A perennial go-to until Mario Kart 10 is finally released (We agree that <em>MK Tour<\/em> = MK 9, yes?).<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Unpacking<\/em><\/strong> (Switch) \u2014 My daughter played through it through at least four more times this year, sometimes calling me in to help. But I could not convince her to try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24024185\/unpacking-dark-star-mode-developer-interview\">Black Star mode<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Vampire Survivors<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(Switch) \u2014 The newish adventure mode didn\u2019t hook us, but the kids did enjoy playing the Among Us level.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>WarioWare Move It<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 We cannot get enough of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariowiki.com\/Megagame_Muscles\">Megagame Muscles mode<\/a> and thankfully haven\u2019t pulled any muscles speeding through it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Games from prior years that I started in 2024 (without the kids)<br \/><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Against the Storm<\/em><\/strong> (2023, PC) \u2014 Fun strategy game but kind of hard to read the screen on Steam Deck.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Assassin\u2019s Creed Nexus VR<\/em><\/strong> (2023, Meta Quest) \u2014 My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/more-video-games-should-float-inside?utm_source=publication-search\">only VR game<\/a> of the year.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Control <\/em><\/strong>(2019, PS4) \u2014 I\u2019ve wanted to start this one for years. Kamala Harris\u2019 Presidential run finally gave me a reason to (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/kamala-harris-control-video-game\">she\u2019s in the game<\/a>!).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Final Fantasy VII <\/em><\/strong>(1997, PSOne) \u2014 Yes. It took me a while. I could only afford an N64 while I was in college, so I missed this one! The 2024 release of<em> FFVII Rebirth <\/em>sparked an idea: I\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/final-fantasy-vii-rebirth-newcomer-impressions\">play the original and the remake games in parallel<\/a>. I\u2019m still working on it; I most recently finished the Wall Market section in original and in <em>Remake\u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(2020, PS4) \u2014 See above.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Match Factory<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(2023, mobile) \u2014 I wanted to see why this was such a big hit for Take Two.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Monopoly Go<\/em><\/strong> (2023, mobile) \u2014 Got hooked for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/scopely-monopoly-go-2-billion\">one intense month<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Pseudoregalia <\/em><\/strong>(2023, PC) \u2014 I\u2019m so glad I got a nudge to play this spectacular indie 3D platformer.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Warframe<\/em><\/strong> (2013, PC) \u2014 Played it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/warframe-jade-shadows-surprise?utm_source=publication-search\">for article research<\/a>, and, sorry, I don\u2019t think I have the time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Games from prior years that I went back to (without the kids)<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Assassin\u2019s Creed Mirage<\/em><\/strong> (2023, PS5) \u2014 Finished it. Pretty, enjoyable but I\u2019d finished its predecessor,<em> AC Valhalla<\/em>, interested in a part of Mirage protagonist Basim\u2019s life that <em>Mirage<\/em> doesn\u2019t cover.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Destiny 2<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(2017, Xbox Series) \u2014 I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/destiny-2-one-year-break\">doggedly caught up<\/a> with the game\u2019s sci-fi soap opera right up to the events leading into its 2024 expansion<em> The Final Shape.<\/em> I then put it down and fell hopelessly behind again.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Elden Ring<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(2022, PS5) \u2014 Got to Lyndell\u2019s capital city,<strong> <\/strong>then put it back down\u2026for now?<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Shinsekai Into the Depths<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(2019, Switch) \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/interview-kunitsu-gami-shuichi-kawata-okami\">hideous beauty<\/a> of this summer\u2019s sleeper Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess sent me back to its lead creator\u2019s previous, visually sensational work.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Wolfenstein: Youngblood<\/em><\/strong> (2019, Xbox One) \u2014 MachineGames\u2019 newest first-person anti-Nazi adventure,<em> Indiana Jones and the Great Circle<\/em>, was so fantastic it made me wonder if I\u2019d been too dismissive of its previous one. I learned last month that some post-release patches make<em> Wolfenstein: Youngblood<\/em> more appealing to play. My brief December 2024 return <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/wolfenstein-youngblood-revisit-machine-games-indiana-jones-great-circle\">was promising<\/a>, so it\u2019s back in my queue for 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-23-games-i-played-with-my-kids-last-year-and-the-87-i-played-without-them-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The rest of what I played<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>1000 X Resist <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Humble brag that I played this acclaimed story-driven sci-fi game<em> too early<\/em>, before some game-improving patches, including the addition of a map for the game\u2019s confounding hub. I still need to finish it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>After Inc <\/em><\/strong>(mobile) \u2014 Discovered the game existed at 8 AM on its launch day, played it until 9:30 AM, requested an email interview with developer at 9:54 AM, got replies at 10:32 AM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/after-inc-plague-inc-ndemic-pandemic\">published an article about it<\/a> that afternoon.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Animal Well <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/animal-well-tiny-review-tiny-game\">great game about discovery<\/a>, and one of the most impressive displays of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/animal-well-sunderfolk-flappy-bird\">svelte game construction<\/a> that I\u2019ve ever experienced.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Arco<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/arco-pc-switch-review\">Beautiful<\/a>, pixelated role-playing adventures in fictional Mesoamerica.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Arranger <\/em><\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/arranger-netflix-switch-furniture-mattress\">clever adventure<\/a> in which you slide the ground beneath the protagonist\u2019s feet, though that concept wore out its welcome by game\u2019s end.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Balatro <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 A poker-styled roguelike that deserves all of its praise.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Ballionaire<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Pachinko roguelike\u2026 need to play more.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden<\/em><\/strong> (PS5) \u2014 A ghost-hunting adventure set amid the Salem Witch Trials. Made a great first impression but was released when I was busy with too many other games.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Bingle Bingle<\/em><\/strong> (PC) \u2014 A roulette-styled take on <em>Balatro<\/em>, more or less. I preferred the poker version.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Black Myth Wukong <\/em><\/strong>(PS5) \u2014 Only on chapter 3; not sure what to make of it yet.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Bloodshed<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014<em> Vampire Survivors<\/em> as a boomer shooter. Sampled it during Steam Next Fest.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 <\/em><\/strong>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 Heard the campaign was good, started it, got distracted.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Captain Laserhawk: The GAME<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(PC) \u2014 Played this Web3 Ubisoft game to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/captain-laserhawk-the-game-ubisoft-nft-web3\">report a story<\/a>. Got to buy an NFT with my own money to do so. Anyone jealous? No?<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Cataclismo<\/em><\/strong> (PC) \u2014 Another good concept\u2013build castles with Lego-like bricks and defend them\u2013that clashed with my preference to play PC games on Steam Deck<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Children of the Sun <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Connect-the-dots, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/children-of-the-sun-steam-next-fest\">with an assassin\u2019s bullet<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Clickolding<\/em><\/strong><em> (<\/em>PC) \u2014 The year\u2019s best-named game? But it glitched during the finale; been patched since.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Creatures of Ava<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 An eco-conscious open-world game about saving alien wildlife. I was going to play it with my kids, but was unsure what the game\u2019s message might be. I didn\u2019t have enough time to play it to vet it for them. But I plan to.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Cryptmaster<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014 A dungeon-crawler powered by the words you type. Loved the bit I played. Need to get back to it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Deep Rock Galactic Survivor <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 <em>Vampire Survivors <\/em>but with mining.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Dragon Age: The Veilguard<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(Xbox Series) \u2014 Spent <strong><em>70 hours <\/em><\/strong>playing through its main quest, its side quests, and slaying all of its dragons and can\u2019t even say I loved it. A compulsively playable game with several character arcs I was determined to see through (Death-fearing Emmerich\u2019s was my favorite), even though I had never been into Dragon Age and was bummed by The Veilguard\u2019s simple puzzles.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2 <\/em><\/strong>(PS5) \u2014 Enjoyed it for five hours, but got sucked into other mega-games.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Dungeons of Hinterberg<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Xbox) \u2014 This is an impeccably designed adventure about a woman on vacation in the Alps who spends her afternoons exploring dungeons and her evenings making friends, as she attempts to figure out what\u2019s happening in one strange town. The game\u2019s dungeon design rivals what has appeared in recent Zeldas. Don\u2019t think the kids need to experience gacha design, either.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Karate Survivor <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Vampire Survivors, but with martial arts, and a cool combo system. I\u2019ve been told they improved it, so I plan to go for more drives.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Palworld <\/em><\/strong>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 I\u2019m not a Pok\u00e9mon person nor an Ark person, but several hours with Palworld left me intimidated about the gravitational pull of combining the two&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Paper Trail <\/em><\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 Bounced off this one after I misjudged it as a puzzle game about level-folding that my kids would like; it was too frustrating for them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Penny\u2019s Big Breakaway<\/em><\/strong> (PS5) \u2014 A Dreamcast-inspired 3D platformer that I wasn\u2019t quite good enough to really enjoy.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Plucky Squire <\/em><\/strong>(PS5) \u2014 A game set inside a book and around it. It has its moments but was another one that faltered as an experience to share with my kids. It might have been the pacing. Or the distraction of<em> Astro Bot <\/em>one system menu game icon away.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown <\/em><\/strong>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 An excellent Metroidvania in a year perhaps too full of them.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Proverbs <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 A mix of <em>Minesweeper<\/em> and Picross set in a Bruegel painting. Who could ask for anything more?<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Rise of the Golden Idol <\/em><\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Loved its predecessor but never finished its DLC, so I put this down to go back to that. Will return.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Rise of the Ronin<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PS5) \u2014 Enjoyed 20+ hours of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/rise-of-the-ronin-balatro-mars-after-midnight\">open-world adventure set in 19th century Japan<\/a>. I was perfectly satisfied except\u2026 that\u2019s only half of it. Shades of <em>Far Cry 2 <\/em>and other games with a second map that is not needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Rogue Prince of Persia<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Liked this roguelike well enough.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Rotwood<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(PC) \u2014 Cartoony combat game that didn\u2019t keep hold of me for long.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Schim <\/em><\/strong>(Switch) \u2014 I loved the concept of a 2D platformer about jumping from shadow to shadow, but lost interest after some repetitious levels.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Senua\u2019s Saga: Hellblade 2<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 An adventure that was stunning to look at and listen to, if less impressive to play.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Skull &amp; Bones<\/em><\/strong> (Xbox Series X) \u2014 Got to the game\u2019s second half in search of the bespoke nooks and crannies that typically win me over to most Ubisoft open worlds. Didn\u2019t find them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>STALKER 2<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 I was happy for the developers to launch this, but STALKER is just too hostile an experience for my liking.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Star Wars Outlaws<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Xbox Series X) \u2014 I didn\u2019t like the instant-fail stealth but found planets that were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/i\/149352063\/outlaws-buried-treasures\">marvelously rewarding to explore<\/a>. Outlaws has a gameplay structure that doesn\u2019t spoon-feed, encourages exploration and serves as a promising response to the fatigue many Ubisoft players have expressed about the company\u2019s icon-filled open worlds. A shame its core gameplay wasn\u2019t more catchy.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Stellar Blade<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(PS5) \u2014 A strangely structured game with a terrific counter-based combat system, some stunning sci-fi spectacles but also the disappointing assumption that I play side quests in order to unlock skimpier outfits for my characters (that\u2019s what we get for all those soda cans?). Some cumbersome early platforming left me skeptical I\u2019d play much, but the combat got me and I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/stellar-blade-review-ps5\">rolled credits at 39:58:48 hours<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PS5) \u2014 Like others, not the game I was looking for from this development team and not a remotely a strong showcase for their strengths.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Temtem: Swarm<\/em><\/strong> (PC) \u2014 <em>Vampire Survivors<\/em>, but kind of with Pok\u00e9mon&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Towerborne<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014 This sidesdrolling 2D loot game from the makers of <em>The Banner Saga<\/em> seemed fine, but the prospect of full save wipes while it\u2019s in early access sent me fleeing. I\u2019ll wait for the full release.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>UFO 50<\/em><\/strong> (PC) \u2014 I am not nostalgic for the punishing games of the NES era, but I was smitten by many of the faux-classic games in this collection. My favorites include the submarine Metroidvania <em>Porgy<\/em>, bizarre platformer <em>Mooncat<\/em>, painting\/racing game<em> Paint Chase<\/em>, social strategy puzzler <em>Party House<\/em> and Puritans vs devils chain reaction game <em>Devilition<\/em>. With its abundance of more games than anyone can reasonably handle, I declared<em> UFO 50<\/em> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/ufo-50-review\">the perfect video game for 2024<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Ultros<\/em><\/strong> (PS5) \u2014 A Metroidvania with psychedelic graphics, gardening, some clunky planting and\u2014I swear\u2014 <strong><em>one of the best mid-game gameplay twists I\u2019ve ever experienced<\/em><\/strong>. Dying for more people to reach it and discuss it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>We Never Yield<\/em><\/strong> (PC) \u2014 Co-op free running with a catchy soundtrack<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Wilmot Works It Out<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(PC) \u2014 Enjoyed the demo of this game about piecing together jigsaw puzzles.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Windblown<\/em><\/strong> (PC) \u2014 A roguelike from the makers of <em>Dead Cells<\/em> that I enjoyed, aside from its <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/app\/1911610\/discussions\/0\/4701286722076524678\/\">controversial virtual barfing<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Yars Rising<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>(PC) \u2014 An old Atari game is remixed in more than 100 different ways. The remixes are used mainly as hacking games in a new 2D adventure.
