To get you ready for a year full of excellent releases, we\u2019ve put together a list of 50 movies that should already have a spot reserved on your watch list. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The upcoming movie slate this year includes an myriad of superhero sequels and reboots from <em>Superman <\/em>to <em>Fantastic Four: First Steps<\/em>, along with some creative-looking horror movies, the long-awaited return of <em>Parasite<\/em> director Bong Joon-ho, a mysterious Kendrick Lamar musical, and <em>Wicked: For Good<\/em>. And if none of that were enough, there\u2019s also a third Avatar movie to cap off the whole thing. Here\u2019s all thoses movies and everything else you should be keeping an eye out for in 2025.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Wallace &amp; Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-50-most-anticipated-new-movies-of-2025-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> On Netflix Jan. 3<br \/><strong>Directors:<\/strong> Nick Park, Merlin Crossingham<br \/><strong>Cast:<\/strong> Ben Whitehead, Peter Kay, Reece Shearsmith<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Drawing the eponymous doofus-and-dog team Wallace and Gromit into the era of strict IP continuity, the first Wallace &amp; Gromit story since 2008 (and only the second full-length feature) brings back silent penguin antagonist Feathers McGraw for more hijinks around Wallace\u2019s awkward inventions. This is the first movie with Ben Whitehead as Wallace; he\u2019s been Wallace\u2019s voice in marketing and video games since 2008, and is reprising the role in the movies as well following the 2017 death of original Wallace voice Peter Sallis. Expect cheese jokes, stop-motion slapstick, and periodic long-suffering eyerolls from Gromit as Wallace deals with his latest invention, a \u201chelpful\u201d robotic garden gnome that runs amok. <em>\u2014Tasha Robinson<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Den of Thieves 2: Pantera<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (2025) Official Trailer \u2013 Gerard Butler, O\u2019Shea Jackson Jr.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1kmjAnvFw3I?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Jan. 10<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Christian Gudegast<br \/><strong>Cast:<\/strong> Gerard Butler, O&#8217;Shea Jackson Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The first <em>Den of Thieves <\/em>has been lovingly called (by myself and others) \u201cDirtbag <em>Heat<\/em>,\u201d and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VY6h1qL2DPY\">judging by the explosive trailer<\/a>, the sequel is poised to continue down that route by seemingly teaming up Gerard Butler\u2019s aggro cop \u201cBig Nick\u201d with O\u2019Shea Jackson Jr.\u2019s smooth criminal Donnie Wilson. If you ever wanted to see Al Pacino and Robert De Niro\u2019s characters from <em>Heat <\/em>team up in Europe, this is as close as you\u2019re going to get. And if it\u2019s anywhere near as good as the first movie, you\u2019re in for an all-time January classic. \u2014<em>Pete Volk<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\"><strong>Paddington in Peru<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-50-most-anticipated-new-movies-of-2025-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Jan. 17<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Dougal Wilson<br \/><strong>Cast:<\/strong> Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/paddington\/\">weirdly critically beloved Paddington<\/a> movie series continues the story of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/paddington-2\/\">hapless fish-out-of-water CG bear<\/a> adopted by humans, inspired by Michael Bond\u2019s classic kids\u2019 books. This third installment in the series has the little bear (Ben Whishaw) returning to his homeland of Peru to visit his aunt, and getting involved in an Amazonian mystery-adventure. This movie has already been out for a while in some countries, and critical word has been a pretty universal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/paddington-in-peru\/\">\u201cIt\u2019s OK, but not as good as the first two.\u201d<\/a> So temper your sky-high Paddington expectations accordingly. \u2014<em>TR<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Wolf Man<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wolf Man | Official Trailer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kAw4PH2IQgo?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Jan. 17<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Leigh Whannell<br \/><strong>Cast:<\/strong> Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Matilda Firth<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Director Leigh Whannell\u2019s 2020 version of <em>The Invisible Man<\/em> was a terrific yet sadly overlooked update of the classic monster-movie story. It expertly pulled the story into modern times by letting it prey on 21st-century anxieties about technology, power, and human connection. The Colors Within centers on the story of Totsuko, a high school student with synesthesia, who is inadvertently recruited to play in a band alongside her classmates Kimi and Rui. Together, the trio\u2019s friendship grows alongside their love of music, while each of them confronts their own struggles in coming of age. <em>\u2014Toussaint Egan<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Presence<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-50-most-anticipated-new-movies-of-2025-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Jan. 24<strong><br \/>Director:<\/strong> Steven Soderbergh<strong><br \/>Cast:<\/strong> Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, Chris Sullivan<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The latest in Steven Soderbergh\u2019s endless experiments with the cinematic form is an unconventional ghost story, seen from the POV of the \u201cpresence\u201d of the title \u2014&nbsp;an invisible figure watching the struggles of a mother and father (Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan) dealing with family stresses in a new house. It started with the John Wick movies, continued with hits like <em>Atomic Blonde <\/em>and <em>The Fall Guy<\/em>, and now, Ke Huy Quan gets another chance to be an action star with <em>Love Hurts<\/em>. The movie will also be the directorial debut of veteran stunt performer and action director Jonathan Eusebio, who worked as a fight coordinator on the first three John Wick movies, <em>Doctor Strange<\/em>, and <em>The Fall Guy<\/em>, and as a stunt coordinator on <em>Black Panther <\/em>and <em>Birds of Prey<\/em>. It\u2019s an sci-fi action movie about two snipers who are each tasked with guarding one side of a massive gorge with no idea what\u2019s inside. Unlike the studio\u2019s horror outings, <em>Ochi<\/em> looks more like heartfelt, all-ages fantasy, following the journey of a young girl, Yuri (Helena Zengel), and a baby \u201cochi,\u201d a primate-ish creature from a nearby foggy forest. Jordan are teaming up once again, this time for an original supernatural horror film set in the 1930s Jim Crow-era South. <em>Sinners<\/em> stars Jordan in the dual role of Elijah and Elias, twin brothers who return to their hometown in search of relief and a chance to start over. Are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22900624\/peter-dinklage-disney-snow-white-movie-remake-dwarfism\">Dwarfs played by little people<\/a> or are they magical creatures or just CGI monstrosities? What\u2019s up with that <em>dress<\/em>? But damn it if Rachel Zegler doesn\u2019t have the voice of an angel. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Regardless, it\u2019s unclear why this movie isn\u2019t called <em>Dead Reckoning Part Two<\/em>, since it\u2019s picking up at the \u201cto be continued\u2026\u201d point where the last movie left off. So there\u2019s reason to think a team-up between Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and Drake-destroyer Kendrick Lamar could be the funniest damn thing we\u2019ll see this year. Hopefully that will change with the theatrical feature <em>The Bad Guys 2<\/em>, which brings the not-so-villanous anthropomorphic animal villains of Aaron Blabey\u2019s popular kids\u2019 books back under the direction of Pierre Perifel and reunites the original cast, including Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Zazie Beetz, and Anthony Ramos. But there is a solid foundation for potential there, and that potential skyrockets with the addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/action\/465088\/timo-tjahjanto-gore-action-violence-interview-shadow-strays-netflix\">action gore maestro Timo Tjahjanto<\/a> in the director\u2019s chair. The movie stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough, and Jake Gyllenhaal, just to name a few. <em>\u2014AG<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Saw XI<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Sept. 26<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Kevin Greutert<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">2023\u2019s <em>Saw X<\/em> was a terrific return to form for the long-running horror franchise, reintroducing Tobin Bell as the enigmatic serial killer John Kramer in a story set between the events of <em>Saw<\/em> and <em>Saw 2<\/em>. Whatever it takes for a premise that will always result in eye-popping visuals, even if the story can\u2019t keep up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">With franchise-appropriate distance from 2010\u2019s <em>Tron: Legacy<\/em> (itself a legacy sequel to 1982\u2019s <em>Tron<\/em>), <em>Tron: Ares<\/em> finds certified Disney Director Joachim R\u00f8nning (<em>Maleficent: Mistress of Evil<\/em>, <em>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales<\/em>) reviving the we\u2019re-in-the-computer sci-fi aesthetic of <em>Legacy<\/em> but with a new pitch: This time, the computer programs are running amok in the real world. Jeff Bridges is back, but the real draw this time around is <em>Past Lives<\/em> star Greta Lee breaking into the blockbuster scene.<em> <\/em>And while we\u2019ll miss Daft Punk doing the soundtrack, hey, we\u2019re getting Nine Inch Nails. Let the hype (light) cycle begin. <em>\u2014MP<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">The Black Phone 2<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Oct. 17<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Scott Derrickson<strong><br \/>Cast:<\/strong> Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The existence of a sequel to <em>The Black Phone<\/em> raises a lot of questions that only <em>The Black Phone 2<\/em> can answer. But while the original movie getting a sequel at all is a little confusing, we do know that original author Joe Hill pitched the idea for the sequel before the original was even out, and that director Scott Derrickson is back for the second iteration, along with Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, Miguel Cazarez Mora, and even Ethan Hawke, who will all be reprising their roles from the original. \u2014<em>AG<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Mortal Kombat 2<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-50-most-anticipated-new-movies-of-2025-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Oct. 24<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Simon McQuoid<strong><br \/>Cast:<\/strong> Hiroyuki Sanada, Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The first <em>Mortal Kombat <\/em>movie in the new reboot of the franchise was a big disappointment: Some of the casting was inspired, and the costuming looked great, but the fights were lackluster, sparse, and edited beyond recognition \u2014 it was the kind of action movie where the behind-the-scenes footage looked better than the real thing. That means there\u2019s one thing on everyone\u2019s mind for <em>Mortal Kombat 2<\/em>, which once again boasts a very strong cast: Will the movie actually have Mortal Kombat in it this time? \u2014<em>PV<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Bugonia<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Nov. 7<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Yorgos Lanthimos<strong><br \/>Cast:<\/strong> Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Alicia Silverstone<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The latest from Yorgos Lanthimos (<em>The Favourite<\/em>, <em>Poor Things<\/em>, <em>Kinds of Kindness<\/em>) stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in a project that seems even odder than Lanthimos\u2019 usual fare, if only in its origins: It\u2019s a live-action remake of the Korean comedy <em>Save the Green Planet!<\/em> about a man who kidnaps a pharmaceutical exec who he believes is an alien, paving the way for an invasion. Stone stars as the gender-swapped exec; Plemons is the kidnapper, working with his mother (Alicia Silverstone), like any good conspiracy enthusiast would. <em>\u2014TR<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Predator: Badlands<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Nov. 7<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Dan Trachtenberg<br \/><strong>Cast:<\/strong> Elle Fanning<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Dan Trachtenberg (<em>10 Cloverfield Lane<\/em>) provided a jolt of energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/what-to-watch\/23287245\/predator-movie-list-best-ranked-watch-streaming\">to the Predator franchise<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23298437\/prey-predator-hulu-legacy-franchise-prequel\"><em>Prey<\/em><\/a>, a very different take on the series set in 1719 that followed a young Comanche woman (Amber Midthunder). Trachtenberg returns for <em>Predator: Badlands <\/em>and takes the franchise to the future, with Elle Fanning in the leading role. Not much is known about the movie, but Trachtenberg has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/predator-movie-an-alien-sequel-speed-3-1236042464\/\">reportedly shot a secret Predator movie<\/a> that is also slated to come out in 2025. The previous movie in the series \u2014 directed by <em>Wicked<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/what-to-watch\/496609\/wicked-director-musicals-step-up-franchise-jon-chu\">Jon M. Chu<\/a> \u2014&nbsp;was all the way back in 2016. Given the expansive cast (Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, Ariana Greenblatt, Mark Ruffalo, Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Rosamund Pike), this franchise feels like someone in the background has Fast and Furious franchise aims, but nine years between installments and a third director (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2018\/10\/2\/17929870\/venom-movie-review-tom-hardy-sequel-potential\"><em>Venom<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Ruben Fleischer) over three movies makes that ambition seem a little dubious \u2014&nbsp;unless heavy-duty<em> Now You See Me<\/em> nostalgia has set in in the interim. <em>\u2014TR<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">The Running Man<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Nov. 21<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Edgar Wright<strong><br \/>Cast:<\/strong> Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Did the world need another adaptation of Stephen King\u2019s comparatively minor book <em>The Running Man<\/em>, after the deeply cheesy 1987 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his \u201ckill an antagonist, make a bad pun about it\u201d era (Re: the guy he just cut in half: \u201cAh, he had to split.\u201d) Consider this, though: This new version comes from <em>Shaun of the Dead<\/em> and <em>Scott Pilgrim vs. the World<\/em> director Edgar Wright. And the advance summaries emphasize that it\u2019s set in the hideous dystopic future of\u2026 2025. Given the themes about wealth inequity and desperation \u2014&nbsp;in this world, poor people compete on lethal game shows for money&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;this one might feel all too timely. The cast (Glen Powell in the lead, Lee Pace as the antagonist, William H. Macy and Josh Brolin in the wings) sounds pretty promising, too. \u2014<em>TR<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Wicked: For Good<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-50-most-anticipated-new-movies-of-2025-23.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Nov. 21<br \/><strong>Director:<\/strong> Jon M. Chu announced that he was splitting <em>Wicked <\/em>into two movies, myself included among them. But after the splendor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/481398\/wicked-movie-review-musical\"><em>Wicked: Part I<\/em>,<\/a> I fully support that decision. It\u2019s an epic story that needs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/495039\/wicked-adaptation-ozdust-duet-movie\">time to build and breathe<\/a>! And now the time skip between the two acts will hit all the harder! <em>Wicked: For Good<\/em> will likely expand on the play\u2019s second act more than the first part did with the first act, and possibly include more of the Wizard of Oz. <em>\u2014PR<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Zootopia 2<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Release date:<\/strong> In theaters Nov. 26<br \/><strong>Directors:<\/strong> Jared Bush, Byron Howard<br \/><strong>Cast: <\/strong>Jason Bateman, Fortune Feimster, Ginnifer Goodwin<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Disney Animation returns to the anthropomorphic well for this sequel to 2016\u2019s <em>Zootopia<\/em>.
