Despite competition from all-ages behemoths like <em>Sonic 3<\/em> and <em>Mufasa: The Lion King<\/em>, <em>Nosferatu<\/em> managed to gross $40.3 million over five days, opening on Christmas Day and carrying through the weekend. A report by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/12\/indie-film-box-office-nosferatus-a-complete-unknown-timothee-chalamet-1236243366\/\">Deadline<\/a> suggests that every type of sicko, young and old, showed up to see Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd give one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/501581\/nosferatu-vampire-design-orlok-eggers-interview\">the silliest\/scariest performances of the year<\/a> as the thirsty Count Orlok.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Though the highs were not as high as in previous years, 2024 stands out as a major year for horror, where smaller studios hit big and a broader swath of releases performed above expectations. <em>Nosferatu<\/em> is among them. It\u2019s a big win for Eggers, who has climbed up from indies like <em>The Witch<\/em> and <em>The Lighthouse<\/em> and found a bankable mode for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/501581\/nosferatu-vampire-design-orlok-eggers-interview\">his academic sensibilities<\/a>, but also Focus Features, which has continued to release grown-up indie movies in a range of flavors in the face of changing industry tides. <em>Nosferatu<\/em> is the studio\u2019s fourth biggest opening weekend ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">After one weekend, <em>Nosferatu<\/em> sits at number six on the year\u2019s overall horror box-office performance ranking. There was room for blockbuster-y hits (<em>A Quiet Place<\/em>, <em>Alien<\/em>), serving-the-fans sequels (<em>Terrifier 3<\/em>, <em>The First Omen<\/em>), and \u201cunsellable\u201d indie breakouts (<em>Longlegs<\/em>, <em>the Substance<\/em>, <em>Late Night with the Devil<\/em>). When streaming-focused companies like Mubi and IFC\/Shudder are making money with theatrical runs, that\u2019s a sign that not all of the theatrical business might be losing steam.
