Count Orlok looms over Nosferatu<\/a><\/em> like the Cloverfield monster. While he is among the first voices we hear, and the first faces we see, the full reveal of Orlok\u2019s form comes much later. When we see him in all his glory \u2014 with all the sores, sylphlike limbs, and ponderous movements \u2014 he looks like a reanimated corpse. Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd\u2019s mannerisms mark a striking difference from the comparatively youthful (and alive) Ellen, played by Lily-Rose Depp.<\/p>\n

This was exactly<\/em> as director Robert Eggers hoped. \u201cI enjoy the fact that he is represented like a folk vampire,\u201d Eggers told Polygon ahead of the film\u2019s premiere. \u201cThese early folk vampires look like corpses, and they\u2019re in this state of putrefaction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eggers said the goal for Orlok\u2019s look wasn\u2019t really to be a flip of the bird (or the bat, as the case may be) to noted resplendent vamp like Twilight<\/em>\u2019s Edward Cullen<\/a> or True Blood<\/em>\u2019s Bill Compton. Rather, it was yet another expression of Eggers\u2019 constant aim: historical accuracy and immersion. His directive was \u201cWhat does a dead Transylvanian nobleman look like?\u201d \u2014 which led him to Skarsg\u00e5rd\u2019s look, long sleeves, where ample fabric would communicate his wealth \u2014 and eerie movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Still there\u2019s a distinct sense of evolution as an audience member. If horror really is an expression of the anxieties of the time, Orlok\u2019s decrepit form signifies something very different than the rash of undead that arrived in the 2010s. To Eggers \u2014 and certainly in Nosferatu<\/em> \u2014 there\u2019s something powerful in what a more folkloric vampire represents; not a gleaming beauty or impossible love, but something corrupted, unnatural, and maybe even disturbingly familiar, if you were one of the townsfolk whose loved one emerges from a grave.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Ellen<\/p>\n

Like most Nosferatu stories, Orlok<\/a> is represented in Eggers\u2019 film as more of a horror than a hunk; he also represents a sort of forbidden desire for Ellen. \u201cTo have the attraction to this figure\u2026 I think he was probably a beautiful man at some point, but now he\u2019s covered in maggots,\u201d the director said. \u201cThat\u2019s interesting to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eggers, for his part, was eager to bring out the sexual subtext of Nosferatu<\/em>, calling his version a clear \u201cdemon lover story\u201d and likening it to Wuthering Heights<\/em> (which he reread while trying to crack the script). Depp\u2019s Ellen is both a catalyst for Orlok\u2019s awakening and her own pull to something darker, while also being a \u201cvictim to 19th-century society.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as she is a victim of the vampire, she can see into another realm, and has a certain kind of understanding that she doesn\u2019t have the language for,\u201d Eggers said. \u201cBut people are calling her melancholic and hysteric and all of these things. And tragically, the only \u2018person\u2019 that she can kind of connect with is this demonic force, this vampire, this demon lover. [And] Orlok is also alone.\u201d <\/p>\n

It\u2019s notable that in Eggers\u2019 Nosferatu<\/em> it\u2019s her connection with Orlok that awakens him<\/a>, ensnaring her and those around her into his game. It\u2019s the pull between the two that is constantly teased apart in the film, a thing she runs from as much as it sends her into a trance. Nosferatu<\/em>\u2019s power lies in not trying to make that repression legible with a drop-dead gorgeous vampire. Instead, Orlok\u2019s pull is both rejoinder and repulsion, amorous and grotesque in equal measure. That connection \u2014 between Ellen and Orlok, between 2024\u2019s Nosferatu<\/em> and past iterations of this story, between folk vampires and their more modern kin \u2014\u00a0is what makes it go so hard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething that\u2019s great about the Max Schreck performance [from the 1922 Nosferatu<\/em>] is how he\u2019s so slow,\u201d Eggers said. \u201cObviously there\u2019s some sped-up camera stuff, but in general: There\u2019s a way in which Nosferatu is like the Terminator. He\u2019s not getting anywhere fast, but he\u2019s going to get you, and there\u2019s no fucking way he\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n
