(Right now, it\u2019s the newest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/470712\/review-dragon-age-the-veilguard-ps5-xbox-pc\">Dragon Age game<\/a>. I can picture it, the second verse\u2019s \u201cthe Liar\u201d lyric superimposed on Solas\u2026)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">From the moment the song came out in 2009, it was posited to be a hit in fandom culture. It actually debuted with the soundtrack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vaMqhBX9kII\"><em>Dragon Age: Origins<\/em><\/a>, a fact that I, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/459019\/dragon-age-inquisition-ardent-blossom-flower-crown-quest\">a passionate Dragon Age fan<\/a>, did not even realize until I started writing this piece\u2014<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Wait, hang on, this is completely warping my mind. Excuse me?!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">OK, back to business. The official BioWare trailer didn\u2019t actually lean into what made so many anime fans particularly obsessed with this song: namely that the lyrics basically just sort and categorize different types of people, warning them all about a nebulous incoming threat, making it <em>perfect<\/em> to project onto. It\u2019s generic enough to be applicable to basically anything (fascism and demons in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kKtNiPpJy0A\"><em>Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood<\/em>,<\/a> or the epic highs and lows of high school volleyball in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CSodx5wVExQ&amp;t=103s\"><em>Haikyuu!!<\/em><\/a>), but also with just enough specificity that fans can have some fun labeling beloved characters.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[AMV] Haikyuu: This is war\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CSodx5wVExQ?rel=0&#038;start=103\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Jared Leto croons about \u201cthe Good\u201d and \u201cthe Evil,\u201d which is super basic (and usually reserved for group shots of the Good Guys versus the Bad Guys), but as the lyrics go on, we start getting into funky archetypes like \u201cthe Prophet\u201d (usually an older, wiser mentor-figure character) and \u201cthe Victor\u201d (usually a cockier character, sometimes an antihero or minor bad guy turned good). Sometimes, if the piece of media allowed, these labels would be literal, even if they weren\u2019t exactly fitting. But the best fan experience happened when the labels were incredibly loose and just based on the general vibe of the one-word descriptions, because it\u2019s actually so fun to see how many people agree on what character traits these sparse archetypes represent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There\u2019s an art to correctly categorizing characters in the \u201cThis Is War\u201d archetypes. I think about it <em>way<\/em> too much. Every time I get into a new show, game, or movie, I immediately begin to cast the characters in a \u201cThis Is War\u201d fan video. This is no exaggeration. I literally have a Google Doc for this. <em>And<\/em> it has categories for all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jHzOHp9_kPw\">Dragon Age games<\/a>, so the fact that this song <em>came out with Dragon Age: Origins<\/em> is really blowing my mind right now, holy shit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">OK. Sorry. I\u2019ll stop getting distracted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dragon Age: Inquisition - This Is War (Fan Trailer)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jHzOHp9_kPw?rel=0&#038;start=103\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I didn\u2019t become an anime fan until later in life, but I still knew about the proliferation of \u201cThis Is War\u201d AMVs. I\u2019d always existed in parallel fandom spaces, so my first brush with the phenomenon was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zIiOVZXSfHI&amp;t=86s\"><em>Young Justice<\/em> AMV in 2012<\/a>. (If we wanna be technical, only anime fan videos fall under the AMV label, which would exclude <em>Young Justice<\/em>, but I use the term very loosely.) \u201cThis Is War\u201d may have really taken off in the anime fan space, but as long as a piece of media had a vibrant fan base in the 2010s \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1R3phc3nN8M\"><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dLKhLtBG8g4\">Harry Potter<\/a>, hell, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pgkChp27Nc4\"><em>Game of Thrones<\/em><\/a> \u2014 it could very well have a \u201cThis Is War\u201d fan video.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">From the moment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2009\/02\/25\/101154811\/vidders-talk-back-to-their-pop-culture-muses\">Star Trek fan Kandy Fong<\/a> busted out a slide projector and a cassette tape at a convention in 1975, video edits have been a vital part of the fandom ecosystem. Nowadays, with TikTok as a primary hub, the trend skews toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@neo.novaa\/video\/7247217356689132846\">short-form videos set<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2009\/02\/25\/101154811\/vidders-talk-back-to-their-pop-culture-muses\">specific lyrics of songs<\/a>, instead of full music videos.
