You can play it with a group of three or by yourself, but not in a duo, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/elden-ring-nightreign-fromsoftware-game-director-explains-why-the-spin-off-exists-reveals-whether-george-r-r-martin-was-involved-and-why-fans-shouldnt-call-it-a-live-service\">IGN<\/a> interview with director Junya Ishizaki. There isn\u2019t a technical reason for this awkward limitation, however. It\u2019s about game balance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cThis was largely a game balancing decision, rather than a game design decision,\u201d Ishizaki said. \u201cSo it came as development progressed.\u201d Like in <em>Elden Ring<\/em>, enemy health will scale based on your group size. However, the team found the \u201csweet spot\u201d is three players because it doesn\u2019t \u201cfeel too overwhelming or too busy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Even though <em>Elden Ring<\/em> worked just fine with two people, <em>Nightreign<\/em> has a very different approach to combat. You only have three nights to level up and collect gear before its baddest bosses show up. Hands-on previews from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/elden-ring-nightreign-we-played-it\">IGN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/roguelike\/elden-ring-nightreign-preview-hands-on\/\">PC Gamer<\/a> say the run-based structure speeds up the action from what you\u2019re familiar with in the original game, and its unique heroes have abilities they can perform together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Getting around its randomized world will be faster, too. The trailer has characters flying over lava pools on ghostly eagles and scaling walls. You\u2019ll be racing to find as much loot as possible before night falls and a battle-royale-style circle swallows you up. Three player groups \u201callowed each player to go off on their own, potentially, and cover a bit of the map\u201d before they reunite for the boss, Ishizaki said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN \u2013 REVEAL GAMEPLAY TRAILER\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Djtsw5k_DNc?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Solo players or duos looking for a third can use matchmaking to fill the empty slots. Otherwise, you still have to use a group password to find each other. As someone who played through the game using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24210459\/elden-ring-seamless-co-op-mod-jolly-cooperation\">Seamless co-op PC mod<\/a>, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if a modder figures out how to make two-player co-op work. But until then, the rules are the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Understandably, not everyone is happy about this. \u201cWell\u2026 that sucks. I was planning on playing with my friend who I always co-op&#8217;d <em>Elden Ring<\/em> with,\u201c one Reddit user commented in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/1hglhdl\/comment\/m2lhy3c\/\">a post<\/a> about the news. \u201cIf it throws in random third person, maybe it&#8217;s okay, but it&#8217;s not like that person is going to be included in our voice chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The circle might not be the only thing <em>Nightreign<\/em> recreates from the battle royale experience: You might be the third wheel in a group coordinating without you, or the duo ignoring the random player on the team. In a game as brutal as <em>Elden Ring<\/em>, I\u2019m not even sure a ping button would fix that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Elden Ring Nightreign<\/em> will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2025.
