It\u2019s called <em>Split Fiction<\/em>, and it looks like Hazelight\u2019s most ambitious project to date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Revealed Thursday at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game-awards-tga\/495106\/the-game-awards-2024\">The Game Awards 2024<\/a>, <em>Split Fiction<\/em> is an action-heavy platforming adventure game that blends classic sci-fi and fantasy themes in a way that evokes the developer\u2019s past work and the spectacle of Nintendo\u2019s recent Super Mario games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Split Fiction<\/em> promises to deliver \u201csome crazy shit,\u201d Hazelight Studios head Josef Fares told me during a recent preview of the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Fares\u2019 description of his new game seems pretty accurate, based on what I played cooperatively with him during a hands-on tour of <em>Split Fiction<\/em>. In one level, we were riding on flying dragons in a medieval world. In another, we played as spherical robots, each with its own unique set of abilities. I also played as a pig that flew through the air with the power of farts. I snowboarded in a level that was eerily reminiscent of the SSX series. One level looked like it was straight out of Tron. Another was set inside a massive hourglass. In other words, I never knew what to expect next from Hazelight\u2019s new game.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/it-takes-two-devs-next-big-game-is-a-sci-fi-fantasy-co-op-mashup-that-does-some-crazy-shit-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"Expect swordplay, wallrunning, and gravity-manipulation action in Split Fiction\u2019s sci-fi settings\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The premise of <em>Split Fiction<\/em>\u2019s wild sci-fi\/fantasy mashup centers on two rival authors: Mio and Zoe. The two become trapped in a simulation of their own stories \u2014 Mio\u2019s sci-fi worlds and Zoe\u2019s fantasy worlds \u2014 by an evil tech bro who\u2019s trying to steal their work. The women are forced to cooperate in order to escape and, along the way, become friends. Puzzles, fast-paced platforming challenges, and boss fights stand in their way, and players will need to learn and exploit level-specific abilities to overcome it all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Mio and Zoe will travel back and forth between their worlds, switching the split-screen action up between sci-fi themes and fantasy themes. In some cases, the duo will experience a genre switch mid-level; Hazelight has tucked hidden side missions across the game that promise to keep things fresh and keep players guessing about what new mechanics will be introduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The huge variance in experiences in <em>Split Fiction<\/em> immediately reminded me of Nintendo games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2017\/10\/26\/16551724\/super-mario-odyssey-review\"><em>Super Mario Odyssey<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23920680\/super-mario-bros-wonder-review-nintendo-switch\"><em>Super Mario Bros. Wonder<\/em><\/a>, games that constantly introduced a series of dazzling, level-specific mechanics that players may only see once or twice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/it-takes-two-devs-next-big-game-is-a-sci-fi-fantasy-co-op-mashup-that-does-some-crazy-shit-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"Mio and Zoe will even be able to transforms into fantasy creatures, like a wall-climbing primate\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Fares said that <em>Split Fiction<\/em>\u2019s constantly changing gameplay has been challenging to pull off, but that Hazelight\u2019s ethos \u2014 \u201cWe fuck shit up without fucking up\u201d \u2014 helps them meet their goal of creative freedom and experimentation with a relatively small team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cThe number one thing is taking all these mechanics and polishing them,\u201d Fares told me. \u201cEarly in production, when you [design] them, you sometimes think, <em>OK, we won&#8217;t be able to do that<\/em>. In a game like <em>Devil May Cry<\/em>, they can work on the combat for three, four years. We cannot. So we have to make it feel as good as we can. When you&#8217;re playing [<em>Split Fiction<\/em>], you\u2019re not thinking, \u2018Oh, I understand they don&#8217;t have [infinite] time.\u2019 As a player you just expect it. Coming up with ideas and prototyping them is quite fast, but it&#8217;s taking them to a level where it feels nice that is the challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Split Fiction<\/em> will follow a similar model employed by Hazelight\u2019s previous games, <em>It Takes Two<\/em> and <em>A Way Out<\/em>, called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/12\/10\/22167732\/it-takes-two-game-friend-pass-release-date-trailer-details-gameplay\">Friend\u2019s Pass<\/a>. That pass will allow one player who owns the game to invite a friend to play with them for free. Better still, <em>Split Fiction<\/em> will support cross-play across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, making it even easier to play co-op with a partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Hazelight Studios and publisher Electronic Arts will release <em>Split Fiction<\/em> on March 6, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the EA app), and Xbox Series X.
