James Gunn<\/a>\u2019s Creature Commandos<\/em>, the wildest version of the Suicide Squad to hit the screen yet, isn\u2019t Dean Lorey\u2019s first trip to the DC Comics adaptation rodeo. The showrunner cut his teeth as a producer on Powerless<\/em><\/a>, a writer on iZombie<\/em><\/a>, and most recently as showrunner on Kite Man: Hell Yeah!<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

But his biggest success so far has been as showrunner on Harley Quinn<\/em><\/a>, undeniably the jewel in the crown<\/a> of modern animated DC Comics adaptations. If he learned anything from making four seasons (and counting) of Harley Quinn<\/em>, Lorey told Polygon, it\u2019s to have a point of view. <\/p>\n

And for Creature Commandos<\/em>, that point of view is the Bride of Frankenstein.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Harley Quinn<\/em>,\u201d Lorey said in a video chat ahead of the show\u2019s Dec. 5 release, \u201cwhen we created it and when we wrote it, we were doing it from Harley\u2019s point of view. So the vision of Gotham that you see in Harley<\/em> is bright and colorful, and it\u2019s probably different than people are used to seeing Gotham portrayed. What we wanted to do with Creature Commandos<\/em> was really honor the point of view of the show, which is a sort of an Eastern European flair. We\u2019re strangers in a strange land going into this world, and I tend to think of the Bride as our point-of-view character on the series.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

DC Comics\u2019 version of Frankenstein<\/a> (yes, the monster goes by \u201cFrankenstein\u201d in the comics) and the Bride sit squarely in the loophole of the public domain, by cribbing from Mary Shelley\u2019s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus<\/em>, rather than Boris Karloff\u2019s iconic turn as the Monster, or the Hammer Horror movies that came after. Shelley\u2019s original Monster was far more articulate than the version depicted in 1931\u2019s Frankenstein<\/em> \u2014 erudite, even. And Creature Commandos<\/em>\u2019 Bride is more than Frankenstein\u2019s equal, voiced by Indira Varma, veteran of Doctor Who<\/em><\/a>, The Legend of Vox Machina<\/em><\/a>, and Dragon Age: Inquisition<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cGreat voice acting is inarguable,\u201d Lorey said of Varma\u2019s performance. \u201cYou hear it and you\u2019re just like, Oh, well, obviously, it should be this<\/em>. I felt that way with the cast in general, and I love the way that Indira voiced the Bride.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Varma\u2019s skill is displayed in the second episode of Creature Commandos<\/em>\u2019 two-episode premiere, which drills down into the Bride\u2019s tragic origin \u2014 but also her budding odd-couple friendship with the Commandos\u2019 resident gill-woman<\/a>, Nina Mazursky (voiced by The Afterparty<\/em>\u2019s Zo\u00eb Chao).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNina is nothing if not optimistic and full of heart and all of that,\u201d Lorey said. \u201cThe Bride is almost the polar opposite of that, and I love seeing the two of them play off each other.\u201d <\/p>\n

To Lorey, committing to the Bride\u2019s perspective for Creature Commandos <\/em>wasn\u2019t just about giving the series an \u201cearly Hammer Horror kind of \u2018castle on top of the hill\u2019\u201d vibe, but also about the depth of emotion her story brought to the whole series. Asked about his favorite aspect of the character, Lorey said, \u201cI think she brings trauma. She brings a history of trauma and deep emotional reservoir. I mean, she\u2019s literally created<\/em>. Her history is so complicated, and I just love it. I think it frames everything in the show.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first two episodes of Creature Commandos<\/em> premiered Dec. 5 on the Max streaming service, with five more episodes premiering weekly through Jan. 9, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n
