Rockstar Games quietly rolled out a new update for the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition<\/a><\/em> games on Tuesday, with a patch that more accurately restores elements of the original games. Those improvements for the Definitive Edition versions of Grand Theft Auto 3<\/em>, Vice City<\/em>, and San Andreas<\/em> are only available for current-gen consoles and the PC releases, however.<\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re playing Rockstar\u2019s remastered versions of those early aughts open-world crime sprees on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, or Xbox Series X, you\u2019ll see new \u201cClassic Lighting\u201d effects that improve the look of the games. Rockstar\u2019s patch notes<\/a> for the Nov. 12 update are thin on detail, but players have spotted lighting that\u2019s tuned to the multiple cities and weather effects of San Andreas<\/em>. There are also new fire and glass-breaking effects<\/a>, more accurate street lighting, and changes to swimming. In-game rain, a glaring issue when the Definitive Edition versions were released in 2021, has also received a visual upgrade<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s changes to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition<\/em> incorporate updates that were made to the mobile versions of GTA 3<\/em>, Vice City<\/em>, and San Andreas<\/em> when they were released through Netflix<\/a>. Players who haven\u2019t touched the Definitive Edition versions since the collection\u2019s troubled launch<\/a> \u2014 or Rockstar\u2019s quick attempts to fix the games<\/a> \u2014\u00a0will notice that a lot has changed over the past three years. The mobile versions, developed by Video Games Deluxe, brought improvements to the games\u2019 water visuals, fog and draw distance, character models, textures, and collision. Now, (some) console and PC gamers can enjoy the fruit of that labor.<\/p>\n

The Definitive Edition versions of Grand Theft Auto 3<\/em>, Vice City<\/em>, and San Andreas<\/em> are also available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n

Rockstar Games is currently working on Grand Theft Auto 6<\/em>, which, if you believe moon-based conspiracy theories<\/a>, is about to get a new trailer. GTA 6<\/em> is due sometime in fall 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n
