Season one of Disney Plus\u2019 animated Marvel Cinematic Universe series What If\u2026?<\/em> is still one of the most underrated MCU installments<\/a> \u2014 a series of small-scale experiments that build to an epic ending. Season two, by contrast, was less memorable, built around hypotheticals that rarely seemed surprising or engaging<\/a>. Season three, coming to Disney Plus in December, looks like it was designed to compensate for that lackluster middle third: The trailer for the new season is aimed at epic fights and startling imagery, including Storm of the X-Men wielding Thor\u2019s mystical hammer Mjolnir and proclaiming herself to be the Goddess of Thunder.<\/p>\n

Like the previous seasons, What If\u2026? <\/em>season three revolves around a series of multiverse alternate-reality stories. And it introduces Storm to the What If\u2026?<\/em> universe, once again voiced by Alison Sealy-Smith, who voiced Storm in X-Men \u201997<\/em> and the original 1990s X-Men<\/em> animated series. Jeffrey Wright returns as the Watcher, the observer who frames and narrates the episodes. The season\u2019s full episode title list has not yet been released.<\/p>\n

In previous seasons, those titles have all been in the form of questions the episodes answer, e.g. \u201cWhat If\u2026 Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?\u201d and \u201cWhat If\u2026 T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?\u201d This season may have a different approach: One of the previously revealed episode titles is \u201cGo-Avengers: Heroes of the Gamma War.\u201d That episode, heavily featured in the first trailer, has the Avengers piloting mecha suits, which merge into a single giant robo-Avenger, \u00e0 la Voltron.<\/p>\n

Other episodes previously teased at the D23 media convention in August include a Western episode featuring Shang-Chi, and an episode featuring Agatha Harkness, reportedly including a musical number. (Possibly yet another alternate-universe version of \u201cBallad of the Witches\u2019 Road\u201d<\/a>?) Moon Knight<\/a>, Red Guardian from Black Widow<\/a><\/em>, Shuri from the Black Panther movies, and Monica Rambeau from WandaVision<\/a><\/em> and The Marvels<\/a><\/em> all appear in the trailer as well.<\/p>\n

Season 3 of What If\u2026?<\/em> launches on Disney Plus on December 22. Its eight episodes will roll out over eight days. <\/p>\n
