The older Elliott has some words of wisdom for her younger self: mostly vague bits of advice about slowing down and enjoying more time with her family. Younger!Elliott listens, and finds that guidance useful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But older!Elliott gives herself one more specific warning: Don\u2019t fall in love with Chad (Percy Hynes White), the cute boy working at Elliott\u2019s family farm over the summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Younger!Elliott disregarding this advice ends up becoming the movie\u2019s most compelling theme \u2014 and a thread that it shares with cinematic masterpiece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2018\/7\/24\/17602908\/mamma-mia-2-here-we-go-again-cinematic-universe\"><em>Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again<\/em><\/a>. (Yes, for real.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">[<strong>Ed. note: <\/strong>This post contains ending spoilers for <em>My Old Ass \u2014<\/em>&nbsp;and<em> Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/why-you-should-watch-my-old-ass-back-to-back-with-mamma-mia-here-we-go-again.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">At first, younger!Elliot is sure the Chad thing isn\u2019t going to be a problem, considering that previously, she\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/456620\/my-old-ass-director-queer-story-coming-out-bisexual\">only been attracted to women<\/a>. But after getting to know Chad, she\u2019s smitten, which makes her question her own identity. Still, older!Elliott is insistent: Don\u2019t fall in love with Chad! Younger!Elliott waits for the other shoe to drop, wondering whether Chad is secretly an asshole or something.\u00a0Finally, she confronts her older self, who confesses that Chad is going to die young and break their heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In this moment, writer-director Megan Park digs into her most interesting message. After hearing her older self rant about how deeply Chad\u2019s death affected her, younger!Elliott replies with a \u201cNo.\u201d She tells her older self that being young and dumb is a good thing, because if she let fear of the world change her life, she wouldn\u2019t be living at all. So she\u2019ll take the heartbreak, because it comes with the opportunity to get to know and love someone deeply and with abandon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Some time-travel stories let older versions of characters try to advise or interfere with their younger selves, to help them dodge some traumatizing future. <em>My Old Ass<\/em> represents a twist on that idea: The older!Elliott learns something from the self-proclaimed \u201cyoung, dumb\u201d kid version of herself. And that\u2019s something we can take away, even without the time travel \u2014 which is where the <em>Mamma Mia<\/em> of it all comes in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/why-you-should-watch-my-old-ass-back-to-back-with-mamma-mia-here-we-go-again-1.jpg\" alt=\"Young Rosie, Tanya, and Sophie take to a glittering white stage together in white T-shirts and boots in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again<\/em><\/a>, older and younger versions of the main characters all dance together in a big celebration.<em> Here We Go Again<\/em> isn\u2019t a time-travel movie at all, but it does cycle between flashbacks and the present day, painting the story of how free-spirited Donna Sheridan (Lily James) ended up with three potential baby-daddies over the course of one memorable summer. We see all the older characters back when they were young and dumb \u2014 but also living with a certain admirable fearlessness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>My Old Ass<\/em> and <em>Mamma Mia 2 <\/em>end with the same message: Your younger self is part of you, and always will be. Even though there are things you might\u2019ve done differently in life, and certain outcomes you\u2019d want to shield yourself from, there\u2019s also wisdom to glean from that \u201cyoung and dumb\u201d self \u2014 especially since that young self is the reason you are the way you are today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>My Old Ass<\/em> makes the lesson more concrete and tangible, with Elliott outright saying it to her older self. <em>Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again<\/em> weaves it in subtly \u2014\u00a0even if part of that subtlety is a dance party that brings the young and old versions of people together. That ending is a celebration of the past and present, without any explanation as to how it\u2019s happening. But that\u2019s OK, because in a way, aren\u2019t we all dancing with our younger selves?\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">My Old Ass<em> is streaming on Prime Video. <\/em>Mamma Mia!
