The game, played inside a realistic recreation of all 400 billion star systems in our Milky Way galaxy, has changed a lot over the years. But on Wednesday, during a scheduled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/videos\/2289337034?t=00h54m51s\">developer livestream<\/a> on Twitch, publisher Frontier Developments teased perhaps the biggest change yet. Beginning in 2025, players will be invited to colonize the galaxy, forever changing the shape of the game.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-link is-provider-twitch wp-block-embed-twitch\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.twitch.tv\/?video=2289337034&amp;parent=www.polygon.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Launched in 2014, <em>Elite Dangerous<\/em> is an elaborate simulation played primarily in first-person, either from the bridge of your own personal starship or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22419192\/elite-dangerous-odyssey-alpha-preview-release-date\">on foot<\/a>. Players can fight, trade, and explore. Much like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/features\/22628973\/eve-online-world-war-bee-2-imperium-wins-papi-loses\"><em>Eve Online<\/em><\/a>, the most interesting storylines in the game have always been driven by the players, who have over the years come together in huge numbers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/features\/2017\/5\/2\/15501212\/elite-dangerous-harry-potter-salome\">fight wars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/1\/14\/18182580\/elite-dangerous-distant-worlds-2-waypoints-sign-ups\">lead expeditions<\/a>. Now the developers are opening up the possibility for even more player-led storylines to emerge.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why just look up at the stars when you can claim them?<\/p>\n<p>Player-led, free-form expansion in the galaxy is coming to Elite Dangerous with System Colonisation.<\/p>\n<p>The Bubble is no longer static! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y1WETIi7kZ\">pic.twitter.com\/y1WETIi7kZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elite Dangerous (@EliteDangerous) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EliteDangerous\/status\/1851704407697613259?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 30, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Logistics will be key early on in the process, developers said, with players initially moving materials into the system to build a starport. Once completed, players will be able to add additional settlements and other facilities in-system. They\u2019ll even be able to dictate how the system\u2019s economic output is focused, choosing between high-tech or agribusiness, among other options. These new built-up systems will <em>also <\/em>dovetail into the game\u2019s faction-based play, so players will be able to influence the political state of the game based on their constructions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201c[It will] drastically change how each player engages with <em>Elite Dangerous<\/em>,\u201d said brand manager Zac Cocken on Twitch in a segment that begins at around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/videos\/2289337034?t=00h54m51s\">the 55-minute mark<\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019re a trader, there\u2019s going to be new trade routes that open up for you. If you\u2019re an exploration player, you might have a new hub further out than you\u2019re used to to use as a home base before you go out into the black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The team also introduced a new system colonization ship.
