Instead, I\u2019ve spent this week being pissed off that one of my absolute favorite games of 2024 just had its development team scattered to the four winds. 2024 isn\u2019t even over yet, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/prince-of-persia-the-lost-crown\/442974\">Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown<\/a><\/em> has apparently been written off by Ubisoft higher-ups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Abdelhak Elguess, the game\u2019s senior producer, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/ubisoft-responds-to-report-prince-of-persia-the-lost-crown-development-team-disbanded\">Eurogamer<\/a> on Wednesday that \u201cmost of the team members who worked on <em>Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown<\/em> have shifted to other projects that will benefit from their expertise.\u201d And according to <a href=\"https:\/\/insider-gaming.com\/prince-of-persia-three-new-projects\/\">Insider Gaming<\/a>, those projects allegedly are a Rayman game, the next Ghost Recon game, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/24191681\/beyond-good-evil-2-development-what-happened\">Beyond Good and Evil 2<\/a><\/em> (which has been in development hell since it was first announced in 2008 \u2014 that\u2019s right, <em>2008<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That\u2019s despite <em>The Lost Crown<\/em> team pitching a sequel that would have kept them all together. Again, according to Insider Gaming\u2019s same report, that sequel was rejected due to the game lagging behind on sales expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>The Lost Crown<\/em>, a crisp 2D Metroidvania with fluid combat, a cool story, and super-adjustable difficulty settings, wasn\u2019t just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24033589\/prince-of-persia-the-lost-crown-review-ubisoft-switch\">a critical darling here at Polygon<\/a>. It\u2019s got an 86 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/prince-of-persia-the-lost-crown\/\">Metacritic<\/a> and \u201cVery Positive\u201d reviews on <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/2751000\/Prince_of_Persia_The_Lost_Crown\/\">Steam<\/a>. The game reportedly sold <a href=\"https:\/\/gameworldobserver.com\/2024\/10\/23\/pop-lost-crown-1-million-copies-team-moved-to-three-projects\">one million copies<\/a>, but apparently, that wasn\u2019t enough. (Ominous news for Ubisoft\u2019s <em>Star Wars Outlaws<\/em>, which has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwarsnewsnet.com\/2024\/10\/star-wars-outlaws-sold-1-million-copies-in-one-month-a-comparatively-low-sales-figure-for-ubisoft.html\">only sold one million<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Whose fault is it if the game didn\u2019t sell well? Surely not the developers of <em>The Lost Crown<\/em>, which again, was critically acclaimed and beloved by many of the people who did play it. That sounds like a marketing problem, not a development problem. So why split up a team of people who created something great already? Building a cohesive, successful team is extremely challenging. If Ubisoft decision-makers didn\u2019t want that team to work on another Prince of Persia game, fine \u2014 but why not assign the team to a new project, while keeping them all together?<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> exec Michael Douse seems to agree. Douse wrote a thread on X (formerly Twitter) about Ubisoft leadership having failed <em>The Lost Crown<\/em>, and in particular, the fact that the game wasn\u2019t released on Steam until August of this year. \u201cIf it had released on Steam,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Cromwelp\/status\/1849147473354211400\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cnot only would it have been a market success, but there would likely be a sequel because the team are so strong. It\u2019s such a broken strategy. The hardest thing is to make a 85+ [on Metacritic] game \u2014 it is much, much easier to release one. It just shouldn\u2019t be done as it was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cIf the statement \u2018gamers should get used to not owning their games\u2019 is true because of a specific release strategy (sub above sales),\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Cromwelp\/status\/1849147977144606908\">continued<\/a>, \u201cthen the statement \u2018developers must get used to not having jobs if they make a critically acclaimed game\u2019 (platform strategy above title sales) is also true, and that just isn\u2019t sensible \u2014 even from a business perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I\u2019m not sure whether an earlier Steam release would have made a difference for <em>The Lost Crown<\/em> or not, but I do know that putting out a game in early January is a weird move. Very few major games come out in that time period; I would guess that\u2019s because most people are busy playing whatever games they received as gifts over the holidays, and if you can\u2019t manage to put out a game <em>before <\/em>the holiday season, you\u2019ll be climbing uphill to get mainstream attention on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Or maybe it was the shadow of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24175391\/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time-remake-ubisoft-forward\">the <em>Sands of Time<\/em> remake<\/a>, also in development hell, that led people to be turned off by a different Prince of Persia game. After all, <em>The Lost Crown<\/em> doesn\u2019t star the Prince, so if that\u2019s what players wanted, they may not have given this game a chance. Or, in seeking other explanations, some might look to the pile-up of racist comments on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MmX7a_e65uU\">the first reveal trailer<\/a> for this game, which debuted its Black, non-Prince protagonist with <a href=\"https:\/\/ubisoftmusic.ffm.to\/thelostcrown\">an original hip-hop song<\/a>. It\u2019s hard to say how much bigots affect sales; there\u2019s not enough data on that. But I will say, as somebody who enjoyed the trailer\u2019s song and vibe, I gotta admit \u2014 that trailer doesn\u2019t really match the video game. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j7LMmvFJj1g\">The game\u2019s soundtrack also owns<\/a>, but it has a very different soundscape that meshes both contemporary and historical musical influences. It feels like no one at Ubisoft could figure out how to sell this game, which is stupid and frustrating, because it\u2019s incredibly good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown<\/em> deserved better. Its team of developers deserved another chance to keep making cool games together.
