In this case, instead of a TV show format, it\u2019s the song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/marvel\/456912\/agatha-all-along-witches-road-song-spoilers-clues-episode\">\u201cThe Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road,\u201d<\/a> which, for a bit there, was giving us approximately one new cover per episode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Since it comes from songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez \u2014 known for \u201cLet It Go,\u201d the original \u201cAgatha All Along\u201d song, and other such earworms \u2014 it\u2019s no surprise that \u201cThe Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road\u201d is infectiously good and being played in a constant loop in my head.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But which Witches\u2019 Road (<em>ba-dum tss<\/em>) is the best to seekest? Well, after many, many, <em>many<\/em> listens, here\u2019s my official ranking (to be updated as we collect more covers).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">Disqualified: The D23 Cover<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"The Ballad of the Witches&#039; Road at D23 | Agatha All Along | Disney+\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ok2vN2Q48nI?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I don\u2019t know what it is about the live version, but even though it\u2019s basically just the Sacred Chant version, divorced of context it feels a little weird! I don\u2019t know why! Anyway, I\u2019m not counting it officially because it wasn\u2019t performed in the text of the show, and having that context elevates it from that weird liminal space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">5. \u2018The Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road (Cover Version)\u2019<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"The Ballad of the Witches&#039; Road (Cover Version) (From Agatha All Along (Episode 4))\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cObFfXCdjQM?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">OK, Kathryn Hahn does an admirable job leading this cover, but it\u2019s not <em>quite<\/em> the \u201970s soft rock version that Lorna\u2019s version of the ballad ought to be. There\u2019s still a lot of Musical Theater\u2122 in Hahn\u2019s voice, and while the song itself is inherently good, it still feels like the show choir version of a Fleetwood Mac song. I appreciate that in the context of the episode it\u2019s a really powerful moment where Alice recognizes that the song was written to protect her, but while the instruments are good, the vocals undermine the rock energy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">4. \u2018The Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road\u2019 (Pop Version)<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"Japanese Breakfast - The Ballad of the Witches&#039; Road (Pop Version) (From &quot;Agatha All Along&quot;)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TkylJEIXx5w?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I love Japanese Breakfast as much as the next half-Asian half-white girl who wept while reading <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/612676\/crying-in-h-mart-by-michelle-zauner\/\">Crying in H-Mart<\/a><\/em>, but unfortunately this cover isn\u2019t really doing it for me. It\u2019s definitely better than the \u201ccover\u201d cover; the vocals feels more cohesive in terms of the genre the song is trying to emulate. However, it\u2019s not really doing anything that really sells it as the \u201cpop\u201d version, or even enough to distinguish it from the Lorna Wu version, except for having a new singer. It\u2019s nice! But not as distinct as the other versions of the song.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">3. \u2018The Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road (True Crime Version)\u2019&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"The Ballad of the Witches&#039; Road (True Crime Version) (From Agatha All Along (Episodes 1 &amp; 2))\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c321X2IHQ68?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I didn\u2019t even fully clock this one as a \u201cWitches\u2019 Road\u201d cover when it came on my Spotify shuffle the other day (in my defense, they swap out \u201cwitches\u201d with \u201cwinding\u201d). Rock singer Matthew Mayfield adds a nice and gritty quality to the song, and it really just fits the genre it\u2019s supposed to be for. This could absolutely just be the intro to a detective drama! Still, it earns its spot here on the list because it\u2019s not really <em>witchy<\/em> enough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">2. \u2018The Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road (Lorna Wu\u2019s Version)\u2019<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"The Ballad of the Witches&#039; Road (Lorna Wu&#039;s Version) (From Agatha All Along (Episode 4))\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eGI1Yq5Ij9s?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Now <em>this<\/em> is the \u201970s soft rock\/Fleetwood Mac vibes I was looking for! The bridge especially is giving Stevie Nicks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EuJujfaY9os?t=320\">1976 live recording of \u201cRhiannon\u201d<\/a> right when she gets all intense. This version is sung by South Korean singer Seo Moon Tak, who\u2019s known for her powerful voice and wide vocal range, and damn, does it show! We don\u2019t actually hear the full version of this one in the show, which is a shame, because it really evokes the musical genre it\u2019s supposed to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\">1. \u2018The Ballad of the Witches\u2019 Road (Sacred Chant Version)\u2019<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"The Ballad of the Witches&#039; Road (Sacred Chant Version) (From Agatha All Along (Episodes 1 &amp; 2))\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HVxM_JNq6io?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s chilling. It\u2019s creepy. It has all the actresses fully flexing their singing chops in gorgeous and haunting harmonies. It\u2019s also the most witchy of all the versions! This is the one that\u2019s going to be added to Halloween party playlists, the one that is going on a Spotify daylist called \u201cspooky witchy sunday afternoon\u201d or something like that. It\u2019s beautiful, but also unsettling in the way that witches should be! Even Mrs. Hart, who doesn\u2019t know any of the lyrics, can join in here! It\u2019s the quintessential version of the song \u2014 and fittingly, the best.
