James Gunn dropped by New York Comic Con 2024<\/a> over the weekend to hang at a panel with the cast of Creature Commandos<\/em><\/a>, the oddball upcoming animated series kicking off his new DC Universe<\/a> in December. He also shared a few tidbits on other upcoming DC Films projects, especially Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cSupergirl\u2019s a mess,\u201d Gunn said, affectionately. Indeed, that description of her is accurate to the comics source material. Based on the DC miniseries of the same name<\/a>, written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely, Woman of Tomorrow<\/em> begins with Supergirl flying a spaceship so far away from any yellow suns that her powers wear off, all in the pursuit of actually being able to get drunk. <\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wait for people to see it,\u201d Gunn said about the movie, currently scheduled for release on June 26, 2026. \u201cI think it\u2019s a completely different, unique take on a superhero.\u201d <\/p>\n

Read on for everything else Gunn said about Supergirl<\/em>, as well as his highly anticipated Superman<\/em><\/a> movie, the Green Lantern buddy series Lanterns<\/em><\/a>, and a second season of Peacemaker<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow<\/h2>\n

After getting drunk and stranded in deep space, Supergirl gains the attention of a stoic young space-farmgirl, Ruthye, who makes a deal with Supergirl to hunt down the man who killed Ruthye\u2019s father and deliver vengeance upon him. Yes, Woman of Tomorrow <\/em>is True Grit<\/em> in space, with Supergirl as Rooster Cogburn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw the screen test for Ruthye, with Milly Alcock, who will be playing Supergirl,\u201d Gunn said, \u201cand oh my God, I\u2019m so excited.\u201d <\/p>\n

He said production on Woman of Tomorrow<\/em> has been \u201cblessed from the beginning. [Screenwriter Ana Nogueira] came in and she pitched the story to me of Supergirl<\/em>, and it was just one of the best pitches I\u2019ve ever heard. She immediately wrote it. She came in with a first draft that was great, and it\u2019s just gotten better and better. And then [director Craig Gillespie] has been incredibly easy to work with, and I can\u2019t wait for that to come out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gunn said the film is hewing closely to King and Evely\u2019s 2021 story. \u201cThere are a few differences, because it\u2019s a three-act structure, so it\u2019s a little bit different than the [comic\u2019s] structure, which kind of goes through various stories. But it has all those major characters and major themes.\u201d <\/p>\n

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow<\/em> will start shooting in January, according to Gunn. <\/p>\n

Superman<\/h2>\n

Gunn had little to say about his kickoff movie for his new DC Films project, except to wax eloquent on David Corenswet, who plays Superman\/Clark Kent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid Corenswet is going to blow people the fuck away. He is the movie star that everyone just dreams he could possibly be. I don\u2019t think anyone really understands the depth of this guy\u2019s talent, dramatically, comedically. He\u2019s the best physical action star I\u2019ve probably ever worked with. [\u2026] He\u2019s an amazing actor. And Rachel Brosnahan [cast as Lois Lane], I think you\u2019re going to die for her as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cryptically, he promised \u201cit won\u2019t be too long before we see a trailer [for Superman<\/em>], but it\u2019s also not going to be too soon.\u201d Superman<\/em> is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. <\/p>\n

Peacemaker season 2<\/h2>\n

The second season of Gunn\u2019s superhero show spinoff<\/a> of his 2021 movie The Suicide Squad<\/em><\/a> was put on hold in January 2023 so Gunn could focus on his new duties as DC studio co-chair, and on writing, developing, and shooting Superman<\/em>. But Gunn confirmed at the NYCC panel that Peacemaker <\/em>season 2<\/a> is currently shooting, and that he\u2019d taken time off from the set to attend NYCC. Most of his commentary on season 2 was focused on his star, John Cena.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn Cena has improved as an actor in a way that I have \u2014 honest to God, I have never seen anyone who has gotten so much better in such a short amount of time,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cHe was great in the first season. This season, he owns, and he\u2019s amazing. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very different season of Peacemaker<\/em>. Very magical.\u201d Gunn did not indicate whether he was speaking figuratively or literally. <\/p>\n

The second season does not have a release date, but it\u2019s set after the events of Superman, <\/em>so we likely won\u2019t see it until late 2025 at the earliest. <\/p>\n

Lanterns<\/h2>\n

News that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge<\/a><\/em>, The Underground Railroad<\/a><\/em>) had been cast as the Green Lantern John Stewart, alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, was revealed only a few weeks ago, and Gunn made sure to comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAaron Pierre is somebody who I wanted to get for a long time,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cPeople don\u2019t know, but he was almost Adam Warlock<\/a>. He\u2019s an amazing actor, and I\u2019ve just really admired him from the beginning of his career. And so when it got down to it, he was just fantastic. Seeing him read with [Chandler] was of one of those miraculous moments where you go, Oh my God, I don’t care what they’re saying, I just love everything they’re saying together<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gunn said that comics writer Tom King offered the first pitch on Lanterns<\/em>, and continued to work on the series with writers Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof. \u201cIt has come out very easily, very naturally. It\u2019s a very grounded series, a very real series, which is strange to say in a Green Lantern show.\u201d <\/p>\n

Lanterns<\/em> doesn\u2019t have a release date, but is expected to begin filming in 2025. <\/p>\n
