A massive leak of data from Pok\u00e9mon developer Game Freak<\/a>, widely distributed online as the result of a hack of the company<\/a>, has revealed new details about the past and future of franchise games, animated series, and live-action projects. That includes unconfirmed intel about the next generation of Pok\u00e9mon \u2014\u00a0aka Gen 10 \u2014\u00a0and a new Pok\u00e9mon game reportedly codenamed Gaia<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Few details about the next mainline Pok\u00e9mon game have been leaked as part of the hack. We don\u2019t know where the next entry will be set, which Pok\u00e9mon are confirmed to appear, or what new mechanics might be introduced.<\/p>\n

But the next-gen Pok\u00e9mon game may have at least one twist: It\u2019s supposedly a cross-generation game, and will reportedly be available for both the original Nintendo Switch and its still-unannounced successor, the \u201cSwitch 2<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

A cross-gen release, while certainly not new for Pok\u00e9mon publisher Nintendo, would be something of a rarity for the monster-collecting RPG series. Pok\u00e9mon games are usually designed for specific generations of Nintendo hardware, though backward compatibility<\/a> across generations of Nintendo handhelds and consoles means they\u2019re playable on multiple systems. The Pok\u00e9mon Company and Nintendo may be taking a somewhat different approach this time, capitalizing on the massive Switch user base while giving Switch 2 owners a new Pok\u00e9mon game to enjoy, rather than waiting for a game purpose built for Nintendo\u2019s next-gen system.<\/p>\n

Gaia<\/em> may address the issue of delivering a new Pok\u00e9mon game for a built-in audience and catering to early adopters of the Switch 2, and may also address a common complaint levied against developer Game Freak\u2019s existing Switch game: their poor performance. The Switch 2 is reportedly more powerful than the existing, seven-year-old Switch, and Gaia<\/em> would conceivably perform better on new hardware. An upgrade in visuals would certainly be a compelling reason to upgrade to Switch 2.<\/p>\n

While Nintendo and The Pok\u00e9mon Company haven\u2019t confirmed any details regarding the Game Freak hack, outside of certain employee information being exposed, one reliable Nintendo leaker appears to have corroborated the leak<\/a> about a cross-gen Pok\u00e9mon Gen 10. Polygon has reached out to The Pok\u00e9mon Company for comment and will update when the company responds.<\/p>\n

Switch owners have already gotten two mainline Pok\u00e9mon games, with 2019\u2019s Pok\u00e9mon Sword<\/em> and Pok\u00e9mon Shield<\/em><\/a> and 2022\u2019s Pok\u00e9mon Scarlet<\/em> and Pok\u00e9mon Violet<\/em><\/a>. The Pok\u00e9mon Company and Game Freak have another Pok\u00e9mon game confirmed to be in the works. Pok\u00e9mon Legends Z-A<\/a><\/em> is planned to arrive sometime in 2025, for the original Switch, meaning it will likely be some time before we hear anything official about the next generation of Pok\u00e9mon.<\/p>\n
