To successfully construct scenes, a player needs sturdy cultural touchstones, a strong visual identity, and a sense of what beats make a dramatic scene. <a href=\"https:\/\/tombloom.itch.io\/cain\"><em>Cain<\/em><\/a>, the new tabletop role-playing game from the Tom Bloom (co-creator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/what-to-play\/23683271\/dnd-dungeons-dragons-alternatives-combat-focused\"><em>Lancer<\/em><\/a> and writer of webcomic <a href=\"https:\/\/killsixbilliondemons.com\/\"><em>Kill Six Billion Demons<\/em><\/a>), offers as good of a hook as a person can get: It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23528252\/chainsaw-man-endings-songs-anime-finale\"><em>Chainsaw Man<\/em><\/a> meets <em>The X-Files<\/em>, where players piece together clues left behind after a supernatural crisis event and exterminate the monster that caused it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Cain<\/em> casts players as exorcists \u2014 psychics recruited, trained, and employed by Cain, a supra-governmental force that manages psychic phenomena. The mission is simple: Enter the crisis zone and exterminate the sin, a monster manifested from human trauma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cI\u2019d compare the vibe very closely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/1\/7\/21043182\/neon-genesis-evangelion-netflix-anime-meaning-bible-depression-sexuality\">[<em>Neon Genesis<\/em>] <em>Evangelion<\/em><\/a>,\u201d Bloom told Polygon in a recent interview. &#8220;There\u2019s this big, supernatural problem that\u2019s totally outside of human control, and we have this massive, underworld-y organization that launches psychic supersoldiers at it. It\u2019s a little <a href=\"https:\/\/scp-wiki.wikidot.com\/\">SCP Foundation<\/a>, a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2016\/2\/1\/10872594\/xcom-2-review-PC\">XCOM<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Just like its predecessors in the history of horror-tinged secret organizations (<em>Chainsaw Man<\/em>\u2019s Public Safety, <em>Evangelion<\/em>\u2019s NERV, SCP\u2019s eponymous Foundation), Cain revels in the crushing horror of bureaucracy. Exorcists are \u201ctools of Cain,\u201d living on company land and paid in company scrip (a week of supervised absence costs 15 scrip; successfully executing a sin awards you five). Cain has one aim: to wipe out the stain of human sin, no matter the cost.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cain-is-tabletop-gamings-horror-hit-of-the-year-1.jpg\" alt=\"Long-haired agents and an authoritative figure slouch in a bright room. From their perch on folding chairs they appear deep in discussion.\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Chasm\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While <em>Cain<\/em> can seem like pure investigative horror, Bloom thinks about it more like supernatural shonen anime like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/anime\/24189436\/demon-slayer-infinity-castle-final-arc-movies-trailer-trilogy\"><em>Demon Slayer<\/em><\/a> and<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/12\/29\/22202875\/jujutsu-kaisen-review\"><em>Jujutsu Kaisen<\/em><\/a>. \u201cHow those are all paced is that there\u2019s an investigative period in which you learn what\u2019s going on and you might have a few scuffles with the antagonist, and then in the climactic fight, you use those earlier experiences with what you\u2019re fighting to get an advantage,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cI was trying to make sure that the investigative phase actually has weight in combat, and I\u2019m pretty happy about that. I don\u2019t think you can do it in a game where your primary opponents aren\u2019t formed of human trauma.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Cain<\/em>\u2019s missions play out just like the monster-of-the-week shows that inspired it. Exorcists enter a new location and are briefed on the broad strokes \u2014 what kind of sin they\u2019re hunting, what initially caught Cain\u2019s attention, et cetera. As their investigation continues, players may tangle with manifestations of the sin in combat, or face more mundane obstacles to their investigation, like law enforcement or paranormal documentary crews, before locating the sin\u2019s dwelling and executing it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Play is set out through scenes, described by the Admin (the formal name given to <em>Cain<\/em>\u2019s game master), in which players state their actions and roll dice to determine the success of anything risky. The higher a character\u2019s skill, the larger their pool of dice from which they draw successes. As the investigation drags on, the Admin imposes ramping consequences \u2014 killing non-player characters, sending low-level minions at the players \u2014 until the sin mutates into a catastrophic threat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cain-is-tabletop-gamings-horror-hit-of-the-year-2.jpg\" alt=\"More physical manifestations of sin, including a feminine idol wrapping spider-like arms around its victim; an armored lord towering over a man; and a toad with its mouth full of treasures, among other graphic depictions.\" title=\"More physical manifestations of sin, including a feminine idol wrapping spider-like arms around its victim; an armored lord towering over a man; and a toad with its mouth full of treasures, among other graphic depictions.\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Chasm\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Cain<\/em>\u2019s dice system is key to maintaining this narrative tension. \u201cOther games allow your character to improve over time,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cBut the problem is that this pushes the odds of the dice in your favor so hard that it sucks the tension out of the game.\u201d In <em>Cain<\/em>, no matter how much characters progress, rolls always carry risk in the form of a separate die rolled by the Admin to govern consequences. As a result, no hunt will ever be without complications.<\/p>\n<p>As exorcists use their powers, they come closer and closer to manifesting an imago, their own version of a sin. Quite deliberately, it\u2019s almost impossible to avoid accruing that trauma, so each outing draws the player numerically closer to becoming the very thing they\u2019re employed to destroy. It\u2019s another point of reference to series like <em>Chainsaw Man<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23660504\/marvel-blade-1-2023-comic-release\"><em>Blade<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cIn a sense, you are what you\u2019re hunting,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cYou&#8217;re being used to fight fire with fire. Bloom calls it \u201cstickercore,\u201d incorporating memos and ID cards into the book where a reader might expect standard text boxes, and creating a breach between the real world and the fiction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cWhy does manga get away with just being black and white?\u201d Bloom said. \u201cWell, it\u2019s because they have screen tone, and screen tone adds texture. [\u2026] It had this certain aesthetic that\u2019s manga-associated \u2014 manga has screen tone because they print on cheap paper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">This manga inspiration extends to <em>Cain<\/em>\u2019s characters, dressed in an eye-catching blend of streetwise fashion, combat gear, and mundane office wear. It\u2019s a great microcosm of <em>Cain<\/em>\u2019s stories, with stylish exorcists and horrifying Sins clashing against barren landscapes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cain-is-tabletop-gamings-horror-hit-of-the-year-4.jpg\" alt=\"Three exorcists walk out of the page. It\u2019s a much-needed foundation upon which <em>Cain<\/em> builds its emotional core. The exorcists, gothic psychics drawn into a faceless organization beyond their control or understanding, don\u2019t require any extra work to make compelling stories \u2014 they <em>are<\/em> compelling stories, waiting for players to inhabit them. Proud-worn inspirations, inspired visual choices, and a dice system that refuses to let up the pressure \u2014 all of this compounds into the amazing feeling that <em>Cain<\/em> is a game that actually has quite a lot to say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cSo much of what we do in society in general is just amelioration. It has nothing to do with curative justice,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cI wanted to make a game that was about that conversation. This person is suffering from this huge societal problem, but what are you going to do about the current situation? Are you going to follow your orders and execute, or are you going to spare this person and deal with the consequences of that?
