Sledgehammer Games has been confirmed as the lead on this year’s Call of Duty.

Call of Duty was one of the big highlights on last night’s earnings call for Activision’s first quarter of FY2021. As well as being very impressed with series revenue over the quarter, Activision executives also talked a little bit about this year’s premium game.

Activision confirmed that, as leaked earlier in the year, this year’s Call of Duty will be lead by Sledgehammer Games, whose most recent full release has been 2021’s Call of Duty: WW2. Reports also suggested the game will take the series back to the Second World War, but the publisher did not say what time period it’s going to be set in.

This year’s game will be released at the usual fall window, and Activision said it’s “built for [a] next generation experience” with “sunning visuals” across its three modes: campaign, multiplayer and co-op. It will integrate with the existing Call of Duty ecosystem, which is a reference to Warzone.

More details, as usual, will be shared over the course of the year. For its part, Sledgehammer Games celebrated the news with a GIF of WWE wrestler the Undertaker coming back to life.

The developer also announced the opening of a new branch in Toronto, Canada to join its existing offices in Foster City, California and Melbourne, Australia.

Call of Duty 2021 has yet to be properly revealed.
